LED polarity

Hey, I'm building this effects box: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/v2/diagrams/red_fuzz_sc.gif and almost all i have ot do is solder in the LED's (they're used as clippers for the distortion). I believe that they only let electricity flow one way? There's a long lead and a short lead.. on the schem.. would the arrow point to the long or short lead? and also.. looking at this: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/v2/diagrams/red_fuzz_lo.gif .. is there a way i can test the circut without the switch (I couldn't find one today, and i want to try the circut out after i install the LEDs) Is there a temporary way i could not use the switch and test it?.. quick help would be appreciated😀 Thanks!
 
As that diagram shows, the flat side of an LED is the cathode, connected to negative. make sure that you have that 4k7 resistor in series with the LED or it'll last all of half a second. If you get the polarity wrong, don't worry. You won't blow it. LEDs are diodes and their purpose is to only let current fow in one direction.

The LEDs are easy for this circuit. Just put one in one way and the other in the other way. It doesn't matter which one is which.

Regarding the switch, this is a 3PDT switch. That means there are three electrically independent switches that are operated by the same mechanism.

The three switches are arranged in three columns. The middle row is then connected to either the upper row or the lower row, depending on the position of the switch lever.

To use the fuzz, you want to connect the middle row to the bottom row. So, from left-to-right, connect:

The lower two black wires in the first column together.

The green wire to the purple wire in the second column.

The brown wire to the blue wire in the third column.

thanks for the help- hopefully some day i'll know half as much as some of you.. anyways.. i did what Charles said.. still didnt work, but i doubt he was wrong.. i had a pretty big mess on the breadboard and i probably hooked somthing up wrong. I'm goin to wait and get the switch, and i'm also goin to order a premade PCB for the circut; that will be much smaller and more easy to fit into the foot switch. Speaking of which, i'm building a small sheet metal brake (finder style) for making___ (insert plural word for chassis)😕 and other box type things.. hopefully it'll work! BTW, where should i post stuff like this (since this isnt an amp) but it still has some of the same components as soild state stuff... so i thought here.. w/e tho.. thanks

alright thanks for the help everyone! i'm almost all set but i'm still waiting for a switch to arrive in the mail (a 3PDT footswitch...couldnt find one anywhere!!) Anyways, I have a few more noobie questions. Again looking at this: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/v2/diagrams/red_fuzz_lo.gif , there's an LED (D3) with a 4.7k resistor (R12).. on the schem there's no LED, that was an add on that wasnt on the schem, so by looking at that diagram, would the long or the short lead of the LED be hooked up to teh 4k7 (r12) resistor? And just to make sure, i'm assuming that when looking at the wiring diagram, you're looking at the backs of the pots? Lets see.. i better make sure this will be my last post about this.. anything else?..oh- i have the DC jack, but it's a different style than the one shown. The one i have looks like l _ l on the back.. the bottom and left prongs are the only ones that have a connection. Which prongs would the different wires go to? BTW, its made so when you plug the power adapter in, it disconnects the battery.. heh u all prolly knew that ..I really appreciate the help! thanks
