Laptop lcd and laptop motherboard

Hi guys,

I read somewhere in this forum the various ways of driving a laptop lcd but could not find the answere when I searched for it.

Here is the background.

I was thinking of purchasing a lcd monitor and doing the conversions so that it can be used for projection. I was also going to build a HTPC for driving the monitor and playing the DVD through the pc.

This got me thinking. I found some laptop motherboard from ebay. They can be had for around 50-100 dollars. No cpu, or anything appart from motherboard. Then I was going to buy the laptop lcd that matches this brand and model.

I would also buy the laptop video card that goes with it. Cost should be in the ballpark of 200 dollars for mboard, cpu and vcard. Thats a bit more expensive then regular desktop stuff but this way maybe I can drive a high resulution laptop lcd through the laptop motherboard?

I read somewhere that laptops have the lcd controller built into the motherboard. Is this true. Will this be a good setup.

Cheers,

Exipnos.

Most Laptops have the video controller intergrated into the main PCB, certain others such as the Inspiron 8200 have a seperate board with the video controller so it can be upgraded. It should be noted that only the LCD that was specifically designed for that board will work, as the video BIOS contains information specifically for that panel. The ATA connectors, along with the power connectors will most likely be non-standard. You should make sure you get a heatsink with the board unless you feel like modifying another one to some how fit.

The only laptop component I was able to find a use for was the LCD screen. To use anything else was a "electronic nightmare" for me, just about anything inside a laptop is VERY SPECIFIC and proprietory. My advice? ....buy an LCD controller card and the appropriate cable and panel ...
