Hi guys,

I have bought a portable amplifier which is used in cars actually it is a cheap china made amplifier but I was very curious to know what IC has been used in it. Because my friend told me he runs 4 to 6 speakers on it but I didn't believe him because I know a single chip amplifier can not handle that wattage. So I opened the amplifier and I was shocked because the IC was LA4440 which is only 19w in bridge mode and only 6w in sterio mode. I looked at the box and it was written 200w amplifier.

Now here some people say it is PMPO rating but my question is if this IC is only 6+6w per channel then how come it is running. 8 and 12 inch speakers. Any idea?

the size of the speaker has nothing to do with the amplifier driving it. It depends on the amplifier rating ie can it drive a 4 ohm or 8 ohm load. As long as the speaker is within the amplifiers rating it can be any size. You can hook up a stadium full of speakers to an amplifier as long as they look like an 4 or 8 ohm load the amplifier doesn't care.

an ampliier with a 12 watt rating means the maximum output of the amplifier is 12 watts under certain conditions ie 10% distortion. A speaker with a 100 watt rating means the voice coil will probably burn up or the speaker cone may be destroyed if the power to the speaker is greater than 100 watts. There are usually limits such as frequency and time duration. ie pink noise 100-200hz 100 watts for 10 seconds. You can run a 1000 watt speaker with a portable radio.

If you drive a car that has 500 horsepower, do you always use the 500 horsepower?
