Which of these 2 sounds the best? I am bussy restoring 2 x Mullard 5-20's and can get both tubes but can afford only 1 type. Have anybody compared these 2 soundwise?
Buy the KT77 quick, sell them to the guitar boys and buy plenty of EL34 on the proceeds! Good grief, how do you manage to turn up this stuff? KT77 is very rare.

Hmmm....may we know what do you have against KT 77?
Did you work with this type, and,if yes, wich brand?
...just for my curiosity....since "they'r very rare"......😉
I've nothing against them at all, however, I see what you mean, my post reads as if I don't like them. I have never used them, so I don't have an opinion on sound, merely on their price. They were made by GEC, and are respected as being superb valves that musicians will pay an arm and a leg for. I am assuming that JDev has found GEC examples, not dodgy copies.
OK!
THX,EC8010!
This is the answer I expected for....
I'd say, rather keep those 77's for an "audiophile" application,(especially if they're valuable GEC's or something similar),and let go the 34's in favour of anyone who wants them, guitarist or not.
My opinion? I have a visceral disgrace against almost any kind of EL34,especially in home systems, and EVEN in guitar and bass amps....well,the ones I can stand are really NOS and outrageous expensive.

Unfortunately I will only find out tomorrow what brand they are, I got hold of an old guy that used to repair and build all types and sorts of audio stuff, now retired and lots of equipment and things up for sale. He just said he got some of KT77's and I must come around to look at them.
The EL34's I can get are definately Electro Harmonix - any opinions on them?
P.S: Mean nothing bad with "old guys" - they are usually very knowledgable and usaully got good advice, if they are not too old yet

Re: OK!
What would you then reccomend to use in place of EL34 in case KT77 is no more available or maybe cheap copie - not org. GEC ?

In this case, you really have no choice :run like hell out of the EH tubes, they're REALLY "guitar" tubes (no matter what this involves, good or bad....sorry,fellow players, nothing personal....)😉
Re: Re: OK!
I can hardly believe that your older repairman has some cheap (....Chinese?Patagonian?) KT 77's.
As EC 8010 said, the most known maker is GE,but I suspect some surprises for you tomorrow....these old guys are full of surprises, especially if they see the younger generation being very much in the domain they loved soooo much....😉
About your question on an eventual replacement, hard to say...if you use some other (better) output tubes, you'll have to modify a little the entire output stage (another OPT,maybe?),and surely the driver stage. In this case, the resemblance with the original amp, both electrical and as a layout will differ, and I'm not sure if you want to go the hard way all along.Eventually,I'll stick to some 6L6's or 5881's.Again,if the overall schematic permits the change and the pain of modifying is acceptable to you.

Eh.
Hi,
Yes, I do.
They're made by Sovtek and are fine EL34s by todays' standard.
EH selects them for ruggedness and I don't see what anyone could have against them.
Naturally if you can lay your hands on genuine NOS Mullards or better still the metal collar Telefunkens than that's another story.
While you check out the KT77s, which are about the best EL34 equivalent you can get, see if they have the GEC sticker on them.
And if they are in the original GEC boxes than you might have hit gold.
In my entire business life I only had one single opportunity to buy some and that is more than 10 years ago.
Let me tell you, if I had an opportunity like yourself I'd try to buy all the "old man" has, OPTs, chokes, PTs whatever he's willing to sell.
I am sure sure other members would feel the same way.😉

THE MAN IS SITTING ON A BUNCH OF NOS TUBES?
Hi,
I did mean for audio use as well...unless you're sitting on some EL34s made by Tesla.
Nowadays it's more a matter of taste than a matter of choice isn't it?
Do you mind telling us what you have in mind?
Cheers,😉

Re: EH.
That's my plan. He did mention some signal generator, distortion meters, scopes and a pair of QUAD II amps among his stuff. Now I must just wait "... till tomorrow comes
..." and pray for a ship or 2 to come in (those with the
aboard) or else I also could quickly throw my Aleph30 on e-bay - just kiddin, not only is it the closest solidstate amp to a tube amp - according to some reviews - it's also a damn good sounding machine (and my 1st project ever .... sentimental stuff ... U know
)

Re: THE MAN IS SITTING ON A BUNCH OF NOS TUBES?
Of course,Frank!
I agreed with you when you describe so elogious the 77's,and also when you said that our South-African friend should try to see wether the old repairman has something else wich would be of interest....for sure, this is how I'd proceed!😉
When I mentioned the taste thing,well...I had enough dissapointing experiences with so-called "choosen pieces" made by Russian factories and re-selled/re-branded by someone else....including EH.
My comments refer either on reilability AND sound,as I had a few times the opportunity to compare THE real Russian stuff with the re-branded one.In my opinion,no comparison....I'd recomend EH or alike only if I'd have no other variant.
Greetings,

I SEE...
Hi,
Well, I wouldn't buy those either in a hurry but than again I don't expect everyone to be as experienced and knowledgeable as yourself in this field.
Hey, and that didn't come overnight either, did it? 😉
I still have a source of NOS Teslas and from the nineties until today those were by far the best bar some occasional US made 6CA7s.
Cheers, 😉

Re: I SEE...
Acid as allways...nice talking to you,Frank!
But...NOS Teslas..."those were by far the best bar some occasional US made 6CA7s."
Maybe I'm too tired, maybe my English is worse than I imagined...since when Tesla is (or was) a US brand?
Regarding the Tesla EL 34,good enough....but I'd rather vote for some Telefunken,Valvo or even RFT (ya'know, the ones with the little yellow triangle, with the number "3" inside....)

Worth the $ ??
BTW, not minding the type or brand of tube, in general - is it worth spending "alot" of
on this design/amp? I can understand that 1 will do it for a real "audiophile, high-end, Hi-Fi" piece of equipment, but in this case it is a revamped
"1950-something" design, or do I under estimate the quality of this amp (improved to the ideas of Mr. Claus Byrith)

MUST BE MY ENGLISH...
Hi,
I don't say that either:
The keyword is "bar" meaning: "except for" by which I meant that if you can get the original US made 6CA7s than those are to be prefered IMHO.
Yes, I know Prague is not US territory...yet.
Cheers,😉

Very funny,indeed....
Now,what about the "value of the amp" question?
I'd give it a chance, without investing a fortune in it...all depends of what it's the word "investment" supposed to mean.
