I've done a fair amount of poking around the forum, and cannot seem to find a kit CD player, or DIY plans on how to slap one together from a list of available parts out there.
Well there is one, but just one?

If you know of another thread please list it for me, or provide a search phrase.
One of the threads which made me curious about this topic is this thread below:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digi...sms-long-gone-let-us-build-one-ourselves.html
In that thread several CD and DVD player mechanisms are mentioned.
Here is one from that thread:
New KHM-313AAA Laser Lens KHM313AAA for Sony CD/DVD KHM313A no Mechanism
New KHM 313AAA Laser Lens KHM313AAA for Sony CD DVD KHM313A No Mechanism | eBay
After seeing parts like that listed, and seeing some interesting/simple looking players on my own, like the one below, it just got me thinking.
The Pebbles Series | Tri-Art Audio
I thought that hair (sheep’s wool) was conductive, used in solar panels recently in the news, so I'm not sure how wise that decision is.
Point is, looks like a common CD/DVD drive and some parts which some of the people here would recognize on site.
Maybe there is no point in building/assembling a CD player when so many used ones at fair prices are available.
However, I just though somebody would have combined one of their DIY DAC's with a CD drive by now.
If you have done so, please post a picture and share your story.
I'd like to try my hand at a top loader someday, been thinking some of these drawer type CD/DVD ROM's could be converted to do that.
Don't see a thread on that either.
