Ok, so weird and lucky I guess. I just started getting interested in diy projectors. Today at work (a theatre) my boss gives me this projector, and says if I can fix it I can have it. It is broken. Basically nothing displays at all when you turn it on. They had a new one sent to them as a warrantied replacement and don't even want this one.
So I took it home to fix. Turns out it was simply a faulty power supply. I fixed it. It works fine now. $1500 projector. I called my boss and told him I fixed it, and he said he didn't even want to hear about it, it is mine! Woohoo!
So, the big question....
Do I keep this projector? Or sell it on eBay and use the money to make a possibly better DIY projector?
It is the InFocus LP280 http://www.infocus.com/service/lp280/specs.asp . It is only 1000 lumens. But the contrast ratio is 400:1 which is pretty good. I'm new to diy projectors, so do you guys think I can make a better one with the money from selling this? Or should I just keep it. It works pretty good.

keeeeeep it!
you wont be able to make anything better.
and if you do, it will probably be big, heavy, loud, hot, consume lots of power and eventually break.
I say keep it.
you got loved on.

Keep it and save your pennies for a new bulb.....thats the next cost that you'll be seeing....and it wont be trivial.
Good jesus! What good luck. Even though you may not be able to build anything as good, i say go for it anyway. I would rather build an lcd projector myself, than be given a free "good one." Plus if you sell it, and build your own, you will still walk away with a large sum of money in your pocket, and probably have some nice parts on your diy projector!

See, that's exactly what I thought. Now I don't now what to do. If it makes any difference, it doesn't have the remote or any cables. So that might lower the resale value. But all the functions can be accesed from the unit controls.
Well then.....i'd say sell it, buy a projector with a dead bulb, and retrofit some other bulb to fit....just a thought....i'll let you know how mine turns out
for god's sake man, DONT SELL IT!
only sell it if you want to upgrade to a slightly better one.
my reasoning is here in this post:

I think you should keep it. I don't think you can build anything better. Use your money to build a good diy screen. That's just as important as your PJ. If you want to build something, you can definitely build a great diy screen that's as good as anything store-bought. As someone earlier said, you'll also need replacement bulbs and they aren't cheap. You should be able to find cables and as for a remote, you can make all your adjustments if it is table or shelf mounted. If you want on/off controll, get an X10 remote and that way, you can also control your theater lighting.
As for diy, I've seen lots of pictures of diy projectors and they seem to be huge! I'll probably get flamed for this, but I still haven't seen any screen shots from anything other than LCD/OHP systems. Although, to be fair, I haven't searched high and low. I put together a very nice LCD/OHP panel that was as good as most of the portable LCD pjs...just larger.

Keep it. First of all you can't build anything even close to the ease of use and general usability. Consider the money you felt like spending on the DIY projector saved and use it for something else. Second, you now have a working projector. If you sell it and start working on a DIY one and you will not have anything to watch the movies on until it is finshed and that is IF it is finished.
I also second the recommendation above. Buy a decent screen for it.
