Just bought a JL Audio 500/1 amp on ebay. When it got home I noticed a couple of missing screws on the side aluminum caps, I thought, oooooh boy..
Anyhow, I opened it and can't really see anything too bad like it was fixed. I tested on the bench with a 2A 12VDC supply and was cutting on bass demands. I thought it was normal since the supply is too little.
Now I hooked it up to my SUV battery (not so thick wires) for a quick test and with test tones and hooked to a sub box at 2 ohms it's effortlessly powerful. However whenever I cue up a song that has quick beats demand, like Rock, it cuts whenever the bass kicks, then it comes back and continues to work, but if I crank it, it does it again..
I compared to a new Hifonics GLX1000.1 I just bought and it's lights flicker like crazy when bass hits but it doesn't cut at all...
Is this just low voltage related for thin wires?

Yes, forgot to mention, the meter (it may be not fast enough though) did go about 10.9 at some point...
It's likely going into low voltage protection. JL amps are more sensitive than most amps.

I'll post on how it goes once the amp is in the truck with good size wires and normal operation.. 🙂
