JBL 4320 -- changing caps in crossover network

Hello,

I've just received some new caps that I'd like to install in the JBL 4320 crossover network (#3110).

Whats the best way to open the box? Do I just drill-out the four side-rivets?

My thinking is that since the caps are now 40 years old, that they may be contributing to the less-than-clear sound coming from the speakers.

thanks for any input on this!

Drill out the rivets and the can should come off. You will find that the can contains all the old caps and inductors potted in candle wax or similar. If you need to remove components you should try putting the back can in a pot of simmering water for an hour or so until the wax goes clear.

If the old caps still retain their capacitance values and have low ESR, they probably still sound fine (I know the collective knowledge is contrary to that but...).

Ditto...Used this technique successfully on similarly constructed vintage x/overs. FWIW, Dave is spot on regarding the old caps sounding fine if their ESR is still low and their values are still within spec...I've found the old electrolytics in X/overs are more prone to defect in X/overs than wax/PIO/or mylars.
