JBL 2404 driver substitute options

I have a set of JBL 2404 waveguide clones and wanted to explore possible viable options to use other drivers than the original alnico ring radiator JBL uses.

I've seen some drivers from BMS which happen to be ring radiators like the originals. The small 1/2" throat poses some challenges not being that common, but there's obviously a reason why JBL chose this size, for better top end extension.

This isn't really a big deal, but it would be nice to use this WG as a super tweeter for 3 way systems due to how nice it already sounds in stock phenolic version. There are some 1" versions of this WG, but its nothing close to the performance of the original.

Any takers?

I have a set of DE7s which are just DE5s with a 3/4" throat. There may be enough extra material on the WG entrance to make the DE7 fit properly. I just don't know how much it may hurt top end extension not using a ring radiator.

I got these WGs really cheap from a trade but they look very well made, molded from FG loaded resin. Its probably not worth the effort to further mess with these.

Having considered the DE7 driver for this WG, now I'm curious if it was possible to do a similar adaptation to the CDX1-1430. This one also has an extended phase plug and minimal taper on the internal throat ID. The reason I mention this driver is due to its healthy top end extension.

@Robh3606 Looking for a better (more hifi) sounding high sensitivity tweeter with more extended top end than most 1" compression drivers are inherently capable of. The main reason is implementing the JBL biradial WG as a tweeter above 4k. I like the WG, but not the driver they use on it.
