hey guys!
YEARS ago when i was 16 or so, i was given some enclosures (very roughly 30-40liters) that originally had passive radiators in them. so being 16, i thought all i had to do is put some jaycar venom 12inch subs into the enclosures to replace the existing busted 12inch speakers. i then replaced the tweeters and mids with jaycar stuff.
then, in my 16 year old, audio infancy, i thought i'd just replace the passive radiator with a 10 inch sub from jaycar. cause more subs are better yeah?
then, again in my 16 year old infancy, i fugured if i put a hole in the enclosure, the speakers could flap around more easily/more efficiently. so i drilled a 3 inch hole in the side.
since then, i have obviously learnt the errors of my ways. believe it or not, the system sound ok, however, i'd love to rebuild the enclosures. soo....
does anyone have the t/s of the old 12 inch jaycar venom subs? would be awesome if i could actually rebuild them propperly instead of just throwing them in a sealed box and being done with it.
anyway, if you could help, that would be awesome 🙂
cheers

Jaycar 12" T/S
Hi ubza1234,
Maybe your Jaycar Driver is equipped with similar T/S like in this simulation:

my problem is i cant any info on the old venoms anywhere 🙁 so i cant even extrapolate any data. i really want to go ported, but dont want to guess the ts to build one, so i may be forced to throw it in a sealed box 🙁

Hi ubza1234,
Do you have a Picture of your Venom Driver= a minimal effort is to provide this Forum a clue/hint of what 'Old Venom Driver you possess. You should measure the 'Effective Cone Diameter' and calculate the Cone Area too.
I Googled and found this:
Akabak simulation of a TH using a 12inch Venom CS2358 Sub-woofer Driver:

The outcome from these Links:Maybe totally wasted 🙁 due to the lack of any Driver hints other that it's an old 12" Venom Driver.

lol obviously, silly me. ok here are some pics. it's a pretty old sub, i got it roughly 10 years ago and its not like all those shallow mount silver venoms. i also painted the cone because i prefer the classic oldschool plain black look. silly in hindsight, because its going to mess with the t/s a little, but what can i do now.. anyway..
the enclosure (unnessasary, but to show why i need to rebuild the subs, the 10 inch WAS a passive radiator and is held in place with a cardboard baffle, duct tape to cover the port i drilled.. young and very naive lol)
the front of the driver, it originally had the word "venom" written on the front in red.
the back of the driver
close up on the back plate
sd appears to be 551.55cm2

I have some old Cattledogs here, let me look. From memory the Venom line was designed for sealed enclosures with smaller than normal boxes for a big hump in responce to make use of the raise in bass of the small volume of a car body
lol again, again, my younger self didnt know the difference betweel a car sub or a hifi sub, still, they sound great in the enclosure they are in, just the box is falling apart and ratteling and that so i need to build a new one. i'm going to be a little disapointed if i cant port it but if thats the case, thats the case.
Never done it but REW will calculate T/S parameters from an impedance measurement, well two of them. The impedance measurements themselves are pretty easy to do.

thank you so much man, your flippin awesome, i really appreciate it. XD

Hi ubza1234,
Thank you for posting Pictures of your Driver.
The minimum internal Volume choice would be for a stuffed Closed Box= 70L.
IMO:If you ever decide to build any type of Ported Boxes(SQ) for Home use: No less than ~160 L is Rec.

Yeah, did this default 160.61 L/5.672 ft^3 [net], 24.6 Hz Fb golden ratio reflex [6” dia. x 16” long vent], but got sidetracked on something else and forgot to post it.

yeah, it looks like I'm going to have to go with a sealed box after all. oh well, that's OK.
thanks again for your help guys. I still have the little 10inch to box up to...
what sort of problems do you think I'll have if I just build a nice big 50 litre box and threw both the 10 inch and three 12 inch in it? I have to still research the 10 inch ts parameters, but is it REALLY gonna make a huge difference?
