12AX7 judging by the scheme was put by force from need. This is a triode with a large internal resistance, and negative feedback from the output tubes is partially applied to its anode. A powerful driver is in great demand after this circuit. Positive feedback is also present in the circuit, obviously for gain balancing. The circuit looks questionable and this amplifier was not very praised in the stereophile.I'd be curious also. I seem to remember it uses a 12AX7 to drive 5 pairs of KT150 finals...
