So I jacked up the bias on the KT88s in the simpleSE to 105mA...WOW they really sing now...
B+ is running at 495 and it is fed through my 5687 Aikido.
Which by the way - I just tweaked the bias on the inputs and outputs...The 5687's are now running at 17.4mA - JB recommends 20...and the 6922's are running about 9.7...
I have tried 6dj8, 6cg7, 6n1p, and 6922's in the input stage and so far I like the JJ 6922's the best.
While the 6n1p's are for another project I still would like to dial down the bias to about 4mA and see how they sound...
Might be time to put some pots on the Aikido to make tube rolling a little easier...

The KT88's were running at 68mA before...while it did sound good... I prefer the greater bias...
I must say that I really like the 6922's...they are really nice sounding...listening to some vinyl now and it sounds spectacular...
Genesis...lamb lies down on broadway...

I run the Electro Harmonix KT88's in my Simple SE at 100 mA. It tightens up the bass and lowers the output impedance. On my large open baffle speakers it makes a big difference. On the little Yamahas it doesn't. Yes I yave played The Lamb Lies Down from vinyl, but where the extra current really makes a difference is with Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode and other music with big bass and serious transients.
I don't know the specifics or your amp build but I am using an Allied 6K7VG power transformer. It is rated for 150 mA. Cranking the bias up to 100 mA per output tube sucks about 220 mA out of the 150 mA transformer. Needless to say it gets HOT! Since it is made by Hammond it gets hot with no load, but too HOT to touch with 220 mA. I have been running it this way for about 3 years and it hasn't fried yet, but YMMV.
Have you tried the 6N6P's on your Aikido?
Run then at about 18mA and they are sweet. I prefer them to the popular 6N1P.

I have not tried a set of the 6n6p's yet...I may have to do that!
On the simpleSE I am using the Allied 6K7VG and currently using SS diodes for rectification. Yes the Xformer gets HOT - but has performed flawlessly.
OPTs are James 6123's on the 5K tap - tried the 3K tap and didnt like it so much - and speakers are the Planet10 uFonken with the Mark Audio CHR-70s.
Come to think of it...the original drivers in there were 8 ohm - the CHR-70s are 4 ohm. I will have to swap the output taps today!

A great album.
Ditto Trick of the Tail and most older Genesis.
And 'Then There Were Three', a little bass light but good all the same.
Some classic Tony Banks stuff I still listen to - love his sound, Firth of Forth etc. I have all on Vinyl too 🙂
I'm currently also liking the live at Montreaux Deep Purple's 'Lazy' - not quite prog rock but drifting in that direction at times 😉
Bought everything by Genesis I could get my hands on as a teen, up to and including "Then There Were Three" I don't find it particularly bass shy, but haven't listened to any in quite a while.. I bought these mostly in the UK 30+ yrs ago. The fact that I can still listen to them at all says something.. Are we getting old.. 😱 😀
Edit: Actually I lied, I apparently have almost all of them, just found several from the mid/late '80s.. Going to throw one on the SME now..

Nick, You weren't even born when I bought my first Genesis album, young whippersnapper! 😱
Hopefully you'll be up for stopping by before QAF.. :d

well spoken for a guy with Max Headroom as his avatar...

OK, kids which one of you ever attended a Jimi Hendrix or Doors concert?
Speaking of Genesis albums I have an oldie, dated 1969 titled From Genesis to Revelation. From the liner notes:
The group started as Genesis, biblical centuries ago. But fate intervened, other groups became Genesis and who are we to fight. So we changed our name in America to Revelation. Moments later up came another Revelation. Now we are the group without a name, but we have a record and we want to give it to you, name or not......
The group:
Peter Gabriel
Anthony Philips
Anthony Banks
Michael Rutherford
John Silver

<snip>
I'd have given my eye teeth to see Hendrix in concert, but he was dead for about 3 yrs before I was old enough to be allowed to see him..
My first rock concert was in '73 - to be precise Jethro Tull, The Bungle in the Jungle Tour at the Forest National in Brussels.. It was cool, and far too loud!!
Home - Forest National Bruxelles Even smuggled a tape recorder in, the guards at the door actually were only interested in liquor, they didn't care about that recorder at all, the tapes are unfortunately long lost - not that they sounded particularly good. 😀
I missed Woodstock because I couldn't get up the gas money. My folks were going to let me take the 64 Beetle "If and only if" my buddy and I had the money for gas there and back.
Nope,never saw Hendrix live.
First group I ever saw live was The Platters.

I was unfortunately way too young to go to any of there shows. Lets see, Jim died 7 years before my birth and Jimmy 7.
Ya, I know, I missed out.
