It's been a while....Tonearm Theory

It's been a few years but the great wheel of hobby stuff has once again come around to turntables and audio stuff.

Bought a Rek-O-Kut with no tonearm.
Want to build a tonearm.

Don't really understand why they make tonearms "S" shaped or straight with an angled cartridge at the end. No matter what you do you are only going to be tangent at one point to the great arc of the LP.

Unless you have a constantly changing head that will remain tangent.
Not impossible, just tricky.

The other thing I was thinking of was a very long tonearm that would lessen the angle of "offness" (but still would only be tangent at one point).
There must be something I'm not aware of in the design of the cartridge....or something.

Help?
