basically, im just wondering if there is an optimal distance or a certain distance that would be preferred between a listener and a sub...
currently i have 2 diy 12" subs in a corner underneath my desk
and im about 2 feet away from them...am i too close?

If the subs are powered and have a volume control I don't think the distance to the listening position is too critical.
It's more important to position them to get the best bass performance in the room.
For example, placing each sub in the centre of opposite walls may work best for cancelling room resonances (for most rooms). On the other hand, some people prefer to place the subs in corners which excites the resonances.
Whatever works best is best.
