I am looking to build a simple full range simple bookshelf speaker
for a christmas gift for someone.
the design i am using is this zaph design-
http://www.zaphaudio.com/archives.html
it calls for a w3-871
but all i could find to purchase is
the w3-871s.
is this is the same speaker? i dont need to use a shielded
design.
any advice is greatly appreciated.
or if there are any other full range bookshelf designs
that are are releatively cheap to build.

It's the same driver. Creative Sound no longer stocks it and Tang Band North American sales have moved to Parts Express.
FYI, the S means that the driver is shielded. I'm not aware of an unshielded W3-871 model.

I have a pair of W3-871 non-S. They have no shielding magnet nor bucket.Timn8ter said:FYI, the S means that the driver is shielded. I'm not aware of an unshielded W3-871 model.

It's possible some company requested TB to build such a model, however, I'm certain the model Zaph used is the W3-871S. If there is any doubt you could send him an email. TB does not list a non-shielded model on their website.
My pair came from a big group buy from Germany quite long time ago. Haven't seen the non-S anywhere lately.
TB 3-871S
Hi, I'm new to the forum but I have built Zaph's TB3-871S nearfield speakers. I think the plans are no longer available on Zahp's site and John has a new design using the Hi-Vi B3S. I built the smaller nearfield TB design for my PC.
The resulting speaker is very smooth and images remarkably for such a cheap driver. I've found it gets even better with lots more time on it and at present it's in the garage running off a Sonic Impact T-Amp and an old Sony portable CDP. Recently I came across a design for a TL design for the same driver from Hobby HiFi dated 6/2004. It was called the Lancetta and is 1.4m high. It looks interesting and I may have a go at it sometime.
Cheers

Sure thing, when I get to it next year.
But in answer to the question, (apologies for off topic) as the Zaph Audio design was for near field (monitor) use, it would have been the shielded version John used.
As John says in the original design. You really do need a small sub for these speakers.
