Been mulling over this idea for quite sometime now, but I have noticed that the grand wega has a LCD to it and it is just being bounced off a mirro and thown onto a screen.
is it possible to do this ourselves?

yeah, there the is no reason why you could'nt. Just rip out the guts of a dead bigscreen and put your projector in there. However, most on here prefer front projection, with the brighter image and wider viewing angle.
I was thinking exactly the same thing driving home tonight. I was actually not very impressed with the Grand Wega, I think there are better LCD projectors on the market. Even the geometry was a bit off, and for what they were charging for it!!
Good thought on the rear projector. Could probably find one junked real cheap. May need a conversion lens. The "lens" on the projection screen itself should allow the use of a very low lumen projector. I looked at the GWII and it only used a 100W bulb. The sales rep claimed 5,000 hour life.

I am just wondering how big that LCD is inside of it,
the sales rep said it was bounced off a mirror and then onto a screen, I am starting to wonder if the screen could be a glass of some soft, like plexiglass

Been trying to figure what to use as a good cheap rear projection screen myself. I don't think that screen on the GWII is that expensive, just don't know what it's made of.
Well lets start with the easy stuff first
-We can make the outside of the tv(the box) out of MDF. Stuff is both easy and cheap to make and work with.
-Add some casters to it like the do on the floor
-I saw once at a show a piece of glass that had a projector behind it. Had a awesome picture to it(was playing games) but it was directly behind it and the pic was only about 37in while the projector was a good 7ft away. This means that we are gonna have to figure out some sort of mirror system to this. What I know we are gonna have to do is have a mirror at the back of the tv and it should be placed at the midway of the screen. The projector is gonna need to be at the bottom.
-The optics thing is gonna be a little challenging for me as I don't have my college physics book. You want X size diagnol screen your gonna need Y size mirror and the projector is gonna have to sit z distance away from it
I think this will be a fun project to do above all else, add what you think is important

screen for rear projection
I would appreciate any leads on how to make an inexpensive but good quality screen that would rival the Grand Wega.
Thanks

Ok I have been doing a little bit of research on this top and here is what I have found out.
The screen is a VERY soft plastic, not plexiglass or glass. Which makes sense since I have never seen a glass RPTV. It makes even more sense when you look at the high end sony 65" and see that their is actually another plastic screen over the first screen. I asked the circuit city representative told me that it is a screen saver and protects the first screen from damage

Here is a question I posed in the avsforum
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=215977
More on some of the research that I have been doing is that all RPTV have a depth set at 29 inches. The reason that I think this is done is that so that they can fit the tv's through doors. This might open the window for us a little bit as we could build the tv in two parts, one for the screen box and one for the projector box.
One ther problem is a e-mail that I received from ryan at diylabs

AJ,
Your design is definately possible. I have access to a different lens that would give you a much larger image per the same distance, but it is only available for order in quantities of 10, so I don't know if I could get you one (most people are wanting longer distances). It may be possible to use a double convex lens in conjuntion with the lens triplet that I am selling to effectively create a zoom lens for a larger picture. I'll have to check it out once I get my next shipment of lenses in sometime soon.

heh, bigger is better. This is kinda more research and design at this moment with more going to research. What I am trying to do is replicate what the grand wega II does. I have kinda always followed the motto if some one can build something and sell it I can always build it for cheaper. Once I found out the GW2 had a LCD in their I begun my research. I saw your design and thought that I could somehow apply it to a RPTV. The one thing that I need different is I need the shortes possible distance from the lens to the screen, kinda the opposite of what people are doing today. Just to throw another wrench in the mix I would like to do 16:9 too but I am not sure how I will do it. This tv will be hooked up to a htpc with powerstrip so i will set custom resolutions for it. That is all I have now

Was talking about the reflective mirror thing in another thread so I thought I'd jump in here too.
I'm working on a projector project where I need front reflective mirrors too. I have an idea which I havn't put to the test yet but I have been researching.
I beleive you can use mylar film (this is an extremely metalic/polymer which comes in rolls, same stuff those shiny balloons are made of). You wrap this film around a frame and I think you can use a hair dryer to heat it and tighten it to make a very cheap, smooth reflective surface.
I had an older projection tv and they used a styrofoam type board wrapped with this mylar type film. I'm gonna try and reproduce it.
Good luck
The mirror would probably be the easiest part to make. There are alot of views on this thread but only a couple response.
what are most of you OHP people think about this project?
