No, not a big rant, but it seems that there are now a lot more snide remarks thrown in supposedly technical posts slamming people. Digs at "audio snobs", digs at engineers, and it goes on. So to all you old boys (before my time), was it always this way or have things changed recently?
I'm not an "old boy", but I think it's just you. Compared to other places on the 'Net, I see a whole lot less of the nasty food fighting and personal crap. And we don't have outright bans on any non-safety-related discussions (I was booted off another forum for bringing up the idea that blind tests might be appropriate for removing non-auditory psychological factors).
True, there are people who love to assert authority and get bent out of shape when their assertions are questioned or challenged. But that's the nature of the give-and-take that solid technical understanding requires. And I freely admit that I've learned a thing or two from some of the self-styled would-be gurus.

Cool, I really wasn't sure if was just me or not. The more time you spend here, the more you learn, so you are spending your time on different threads, so you can't do an AB comparison.
Believe me, I know the quality content here is high for an internet forum.

Absolutely true. And to tie that back in to the topic, I built a preamp this past week to use as a temporary expedient while I repair the power supply on my normal unit. And it was a different design than I would have done a few years ago before I landed here. I chose the power transformer based on some stuff I picked up from John Curl. I used a transformer input because of the influence that Steve Eddy had on my thinking about grounding. And the rectifier choice was thanks to Fred Dieckmann. There are some *****ly personalities on that list, but I really like and respect every one of 'em and I learned from all of them.
EDIT: Aaaggh, got caught out again by the auto-censor. The bleeped out word was a term used to refer to cacti and certain personalities: p r i c k l y

Well, then you probably don't want to be a member of
that forum anyway. 😉

You guys could learn a few things from me about getting around that pi$$y little bleaper.
I know most of them. And in five or six languages. It's just that every once in a while, something innocent gets trimmed, and this particular puncture is one I've been victim of and forgotten about.

Don't laugh- they're right. I ran my system without power cables as an experiment and couldn't hear a damned thing.
I haven't been around as long as some of the "Enlightened" here, but I've been around for a while. It was pretty volitile there for a while, yet entertaining. That's not to say that it didn't have the draw it has today, because it did. There has always been (at least since I've been around) a wealth of knowledge available at DIYAudio (no, I don't mean from me😀 ). It is much less a "club" today, and much more a "community". Problem free? No. Colorful and diverse? Yes. Is the knowledge base still here? More than ever.leadbelly said:No, not a big rant, but it seems that there are now a lot more snide remarks thrown in supposedly technical posts slamming people. Yeah, I've tried that too. Both noise and distorsion dropped
below audible levels. I couldn't hear the amp clipping even
if cranking up volume control to max. However, I got a strange
feeling that it didn't sound as musical as with the power cord.
Nahhh... Your sensibilities just needed a period of burning-in. 😀leadbelly said:No, not a big rant, but it seems that there are now a lot more snide remarks thrown in supposedly technical posts slamming people. i would like to jump in and say that i think the attitude of this place has gotten much better. i was the first in the sin bin (which i still think was unfair), and i really disliked the forum at that time. but im my mind, it has gotten much better, and i think generally everyone has been MUCH nicer (to me). i like it here, it is my favorite and most visited site. even with what little knowledge i have ("little" is even being a bit generous), i try and contribute as much as i can.
i just think we have so many people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. we do have very tweaky "lunatic fringe" people, and then we have the meat and potato people too. some are old school, and some are new school. not all of us will get along, its a given. BUT, you can always learn something from EVERYONE on here, except maybe halojoy 😉 just kidding. i learned the effects of heavy drugs from him.

I think this site is mostly alright. What surprises me are, in no particular order:
1) minimum tolerance to dissenting view: people have almost religious-like attitude to wards their hobby, and refuse to have an open mind towards new ideas. For a hobby that is built on proven science, that's quite weird.
2) immaturity: people are unable to separate their views from individuals. they take any critism on their views personally, something you would not expect out of anyone but teenagers.
3) the "animal farm" mentality: some of us are essentially created more equal than others, 🙂
But if you don't take it seriously and view this is a 2ndary source for information and for help, you will still benefit a lot from it.

With Millwood as Farmer Jones, perhaps.
