Those are called "knife threaded inserts" for put reliable machine threads in wood and plastic. You can find an assortment at the high-end wood working shops and possible at in the speciality parts bins in some of the large hardware chain stores.

I finally have the hardware to match my Black Diamond Racing Pyramid Cones...
My life is now as close to perfect as can be...

I had similar problem a few months ago and just gave up looking, so I might as well ask. Does anyone know of a supplier in or to Australia that has 4 and 5 mm threaded inserts (or something similar like a t-nut)

Probable should have mentioned that fastener supplier only go down to 6mm (because that is the smallest they use in furniture) and the hobby shops only stock imperial.

Sure, any skateboard shop have 5mm t nuts, steel or aluminium according to your superstition 🙂
