Lowthers tend to be happier with high output impedance amplifiers, yours is probably not one of those.

Yes, they don’t like high damping. I have tested a couple of amplifier including technics su v7x, Armstrong 521, quad 303, as well as other 70s-90s amplifier. The technics su v7x sound the worse with lowther due to its high damping factor throughout the bandwidth and huge negative feedback. The Armstrong sound the best due to relative low damping. The quad303 is rather boring. I also tried an Armstrong 227 valve amp with the lowther but I found it too soft.
In the end I started to use a home build solid state amp in 1973 which to my ear sound the best. This amp also have very small negative feedback. The distortion measures below 0.5% so still good for my ear.
