My Hypex ST supply is on the workbench.
It is only wired to the transformer (Avel 30-0-30).
Should I see voltage on the other side of the supply all the time?
The power supply is getting the right input voltage but I see nothing on the other side.
Amps don't light up - meter sees nothing on any power supply output.
Is this usual - does the amp need to tell the power supply to "turn-on"?
I tried shooting the supply in the amp - fully wired - and got the same thing - good voltage in - nothing out.
Or - is my power supply cooked?
I'm trying to do everything I can on my own - learning exercise - searching the forums and all. But I've run out of things to try. I'd be obliged if anyone can help me out.

Have you connected the supply as per the diagram in the users manual? Looking in the manual, there is a signal wire that is used to turn on the amp, similar in operation of turning on a automotive amplifier. You can put your on/off switch on this wire. Have you checked the fuses on the board? Have you connected the DC protection?

If so what conditions at the amps might prevent the supply from coming up?

DC protection should not be required, but is always a good idea to have. I don't own the supply myself, but from looking at the photos of it it looks very simple. The amp should have DC output when the on/off signal is not connected, but you amp will not turn on unless the signal is present at J1. I can provide detailed information on how the supply works if you can provide a photo of the pcb to show where the tracks lead.
The best advice I can give is to take your multimeter and poke around on the board to find where the voltage is missing. The most likely problem I think would be if the relay isn't working. You can look up the datasheet for the relay to find a diagram.

I just made a stock amp with the HD supply that is pretty much wired the same. The modules will not light up unless the "amp on wire is connected between the UCD module and the correct terminal on the PS which I believe is simply ground. In fact to turn the amp to standby (PS has power but modules are off) just put a switch in that wire path to break the connection to ground. Also note that you need to hook up a standby wire for EACH amp module.
