how to make unbalanced SOBOZ?

It is a variant of PASS "Bride Of Zen" design.
Called "Son Of Bride Of Zen"
First was Zen
Then the Son of Zen= SOZ
Then the Bride of Zen=BOZ
and then the Son Of the Bride of Zen=SOBOZ

What next? And when will this end?
Another constructor, Elliot, Elliot Sound Projects, tried to put an end to it and namned one of his amps DOZ=Death Of Zen
But without any success, although this is a good amplifier as well.
So "The Beat Goes On", more than ever before. 😎

You can read more about these variants
at Nelson Pass' service for DIY-ers.

Yes, thanks for clarifying, jh6you

I did some search and there is no such thing as
SOBOZ, yet 😀

But BOSOZ is.
And grataku
was around when different namnes
of the balanced SOZ was starting to show up here.
BOZO and ISOZ(incarnation) was some suggestions.

An unbalanced Zen Daughter-in-Law
(BoSoZ) could be a simple common
source amp (the same as the Bride of Zen)
or it can be thought of as a source-follower
driving a common-gate stage.

It depends if you want to grab the inverting
output or the non-inverting output from the
BoSoZ.

I'd just build the regular Bride of Son of Zen
and use two RCA jacks on the output to have
it either way.

E.

What is the benefit from an Unbalanced BOSOZ?
If signal goes in at the left input, and You take it out at the right output, then I will consider this as two gain stages, but if You take out at the left output, then You have one gain satge.

Wouldn´t this one do the same or even better?

BOZ at lower voltage? will it works?? say

30 volts?..im asking cause i already have a toroid transformer ..38V-CT-38V..Im getting only 30 volts after going tru the power supply circuit..is it normal that the voltage going up slowly to 30volts? not like it shoot up when i power on...slowlyyyyyyyyy!.THIS IS FOR "BOZ" NOT BOSOZ..Pls help...Thanks in advance..

Hi, Tone,

Where are you measuring 30V and are you using the
stacked-zeners with emitter follower arrangement
from the Bride of Zen article?

If you have 38V+38V secondaries, I'd expect to see a
higher voltage than that. (Unless of course you
happen to be measuring after some voltage stablizing
circuit which is holding you at 30V, for instance.)

Sorry, I am not eLarson, but any way!

I presume, that You are using the original powersupply scematic for BOZ.

What exactly is Your values of R1 an C2?
If You use a much higer value for C2 then the effect will be slow power up and good filtration. But how much is slow?
I do have a headphone (Andrea Ciuffoli´s Powerfollower) amp wich power up is about 5-10 min as I recall, and that´s ok.

If You have a transformer of 2X38v, then You should get a little more than 50v after the rectifire bridge, wich shoud be just good for the BOZ.
The BOZ can even run at 30V, but at higher distortions values, and then the big question, how high is high?

Hi elarson,
i get 30volts btw C3/C4 and R102/R202..any idea?..how about the slow power up?..any tought? can the boz run on 30volts?

I run my BoZ at about 34 volts. I used a different
drain resistor in mine (316ohm Caddock left over
from an older project) and then scaled the source
resistor for the desired gain. (I want to say it's
about 68 ohms.)

It sounds terrific to my ears.

Take a look at your PSU. Check for overheating
parts (especially a faulty cap... that would be, as
Nelson often says "double plus un-good") -- if
something is drawing more current than it ought,
that could conceivably account for your lower
than expected voltage rail.
