When I click on 'insert link' a small window appears asking me to enter the URL. While this is on the screen I am unable to do anything else. It appears the only way to do this is manually, I find that hard to believe, am I missing something obvious, would it be a limitation of my device, it being a humble chromebook? Thanks

In technical terms, it is a "modal dialog box". It captures the "entire application".
Though in FireFox on Windows, I can switch to another tab.
The general technique is to find and "copy" (to clipboard) your link URL before you begin "insert link".
In another tab, I go to, say, LOL Cats, grab the site or page URL (not some link-to-a-link as Google gives you), switch back to this forum's tab, 'insert link',
Lolcats - Funny Cat Pictures
BTW, simply dropping the naked URL in your post text does the "same" thing. It will be clickable, and the forum usually parses-out a human-readable description by peeping the site/page head.
> a limitation of my device, it being a ... chromebook?
I have not used one. I believe the base browser is Chrome which is very full-featured. What you may be "missing" is the many ways a PC user can copy to clipboard with mouse and/or keyboard. A touchscreen-only interface is IMHO more limited. I do have an Android phone and get VERY frustrated trying to find the trick to get things to the clipboard, and off, and the right thing.
I *believe* you are having trouble with copy-to-clipboard. On *my* dumb-phone, long-hold will sometimes do something like that. Not always (for me). Sometimes not the bit I think I am long-holding. Sometimes much more than I want.
For other reasons I "HAD" to get a stylus and keyboard. But these are not big improvements for copy/paste work.

Thanks PRR, for your very full answer, sorry I couldn't give more to go on 😱http://www.mouser.co.uk/ aha I've found an app that gives me a clipboard.🙂 That didn't work though...mmm..

Two ways that I use.
One is a simple copy and paste. Just go to the header at the top of the page you want to link to and copy the URL. Then just paste it into the thread:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/forum-problems/304359-how-insert-link.html#post5003334
If you are pasting from a long thread with lots of page numbers then you can take out the 'page number' as that confuses systems that do not have the forum default page settings.
This should be post #91083 If you have retained the forum defaults in your personal forum preference settings then it will work. If not then it will go to a 'wrong' page.

We take out the -4555 which is the forum page number. That should work for any forum settings a user may have.

Second method is to copy the URL as above (or if its a post in a thread, right click the post number and select copy link).
Now use the 'insert link' tab, delete the default HTTP:// that appears in blue text, and paste your URL into the box. Click OK and then you can if you wish type your own name for the link, overwriting the second duplicate of your pasted URL as here.
TYPE ANYTHING HERE
Have a play in this thread and try copy and pasting stuff 🙂

Thanks Mooly, it is a lot to get my head round! I have googled 'clipboard' and it does seem to be a limitation in a chromebook. www.mouser.co.uk/Passive-Components/_/N-5g73/ aha, I am making progress!www.diyaudio.com/forums/forum-problems/304359-how-insert-link.html#post5003350. Yes, I think the problem was I needed the 'clipboard app'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_moRogiog0 When I click insert link tab I still have the issue of the small window appearing and not letting me do anything else but it's not a problem, I can do it now and I won't want to do it much, so I'm happy now! Thanks a lot

Chromebook HAS a clipboard. Built-in.
But without knowing what you have for "keyboard" or "mouse", it is hard to describe HOW you use it.
EDIT -- Chromebooks have keyboards. Obviously I have not used one. But it *appears* you use your finger to point-at (tap) the text you want, then use Mac/Windows conventional Shift-Arrow (to extend selection), Ctrl-C (copy), Ctrl-V (paste). Cheatsheet below.
You can find enhanced clipboard apps. Mostly they can save multiple clips. Not something I do even every year. But if they also TELL you how to do the clipboard, fine.
Here's some links.

Thank you PRR, I should have thought to go to "Chromebook for Dummies"...perfect! I'm learning. I also discovered accidentally that I can grab txt and move it up to another tab and then that tab opens up. The clipboard app I found wasn't very good, quite confusing.
