How big can this be, and how loud does it need to go?

... and are you sure you want to be able to go that low?

For home use, you could probably get away with a couple of long-throw 12" drivers with some eq (or passive radiators) to get low.

If you wanted to fill a big space with such low frequencies, its not going to be cheap.

A 16 Hz pipe organ?

I'm guessing loud is required and in the true spirit of such devices... you can get
low and loud as long as you go HUGE early.

The above is a kit with a 12" subwoofer, the drawings and various other things
you'll need to build the monster front loaded horn.

It will go down to 14Hz in a corner and outputs 102dB at one watt in the low range. I'd love to build one but 5 sheets of plywood would make it impossible to move around.

For church use, two of those monsters with a 400 watt per channel Class D amp should do it for you. If you need more than that, it might require a little building modification to withstand those frequencies.

Or is there a better way? I'm limited in funds.
Tapped horns will give you the most bang for the buck.

Works well down to 17.5 Hz, using a pair of JBL GTO1214, should be 120 dB or more depending on room placement.
About 500 liter, 17.65 cubic feet, not terribly huge for the LF extension.

Going lower than 16 Hz will require a longer path length, if the same volume cabinet is used, it will have less overall SPL, and will probably need more expensive drivers.

I always wondered what a single CSS Trio12 would do in a single Kraken 1x12 with an extended horn tuned to 16Hz.

The Trio has an Fs of 22Hz and the JBL 28Hz
Trio BL is 14.9 with the JBL at 16.7
Trio Vas is 97 liters and the JBL 58.2 liters
Trio Sd is 491 and JBL at 511
Trio Xmax 20mm and JBL at 14.5mm
Trio Qts is .43 with the JBL at .47

For a pipe organ, in my limited knowledge of tapped horns--would the Trio12 in a tapped horn tuned to 16 Hz be better suited to pipe organs VS the JBL at 18Hz? Is the Trio12 a good woofer for TH or should it only be used in a front loaded horn?

The cost of a Trio12 is about 50% higher than the JBL but if it can be used with a TH tuned to 16Hz--it might be worth it.

How large is the room that this electronic organ will be used? If it is a small room for practice--a much smaller subwoofer can be used. If it's a church and you wish to fill the halls with the 16Hz pipe--it will get very large, very expensive and quite complicated quickly.

Given the specifications, the Trio looks like it should be capable of much more VLF output than a single JBL, but I doubt it could keep up with a pair.

A 22 Hz Fs is much more appropriate for trying to dig below 16 Hz than a 28 Hz Fs.

Maybe someone who likes to model will answer your question with some sims.

Back in '90 I was getting 17Hz in my car with an 8" driver, mild active EQ (+6dB at 20 Hz) and around 40 Watts. It would not have enough SPL in the house though.
