How low can a 3" Fostex go?

Hi Folks,

First post here, so please excuse what might be a silly question.

Assuming cabinet size and complexity is not a consideration, how low a response could you get out of a fostex 83 or 87, and what sort of cabinet would you use to do it?

I've always liked impressing people with big noise from little speakers, and I'm interested how far you could take this.

Has anyone designed big boxes for these little speakers?

At one audio fair I heard Jordan VTL cabs and I was amazed how deep thay can go. Another example is Visaton Topas. Both can do 30Hz.
So I guess some sort of chambered TL might be a good start.
There is a catch you know. Moderate SPL only.
If I find some time maybe I try something in Hornresp.

Greets!

Technically, any driver can be reactance annulled [hyperbolic] horn loaded down to its lower mass corner [Flc] = Fs*Qts'/2 and since we're always trading efficiency for [wider] bandwidth [BW] it will basically have zero power handling, so strictly whatever the horn gain is at 'X' frequency and of course will be quite long, terminating into a [large] living room size termination [mouth].

So, how big can you 'afford' to go and/or how low a peak SPL will you find acceptable/tolerate? 😉

I have flat in room down to 50Hz with a pair of 3" Visatons, so don't see why you can't
I used sealed boxes and DEQ in DSP to get there and limiting for extra protection. Sounds a bit thin at higher volumes, but I live in an apartment, so those are out anyway

Good luck,
Brian

FE83 or FE87 do not go low. You can sensibly get maybe 150 Hz.

The FF85wk is the bass king here, and IMP souds better.

Wither this or the almost unobtainium FE8x SOL) is a FH-lite is capable of 65-75 Hz (at a level limited by the cone size, in the horn, mote than you would expect), but it does have to be noted that room placement and room gain make a big difference.

Frugel-Horn Lite for 3" drivers

Right. GM has given the technically correct data (down to the lower mass-corner Flc, assuming a full-sized, reactance-annulled hyperbolic and zero power-handling worthy of the name). Ejecting all semblence of engineering sanity, you could stick one in a very low-tuned QW pipe -one tuned even below Flc, but it's not exactly recommended. While it will make noise (prior to expiring), it won't do it very loudly, nor would the resulting alignment be what you'd call pretty. 😉

FH-lite works well with the 85 (a very nice little unit), or one of the other design drivers. While no bass-monster, as Dave says, it doesn't do a bad job at all for such a small speaker. To my surprise, the last hi-fi show I attended in the UK a couple of years back had (as I recall) 3 rooms running them, either as the main units for the weekend, or as an alternative to a different set of speakers. Quite a few walked out of the different rooms scratching their heads that a 3in driver can produce so much sound. These things are relative -they aren't going to beat a full customised vintage Altec setup with a couple of 15in woofers & compression mid-tweet per channel. 😉 But in a small space & at modest levels, they do a good job for a little 'un, although I say it as shouldn't. 😛
