How I built my LCD and Fresnel frames

I got a message today asking me how I built my frames. I thought it best to share this with everyone so that someone may improve on what I came up with.

Supplies:

2x 14x15" 1/4" thick scrap wood. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, more like a finishing paneling with a glued on surface.

4x Rubber Gaskets per frame - I found these in my family's garage they are probably 30 years old.

4x Bolts long enough to clear the gasket, fresnel, and wood length - mine were found by rummaging (and bolts to match)

Construction:

I used my father's new Bosche Jigsaw cutter with variable speeds to cut out the area for the fresnels. I don't recall the exact dimensions - but using some algebra I calculated the distance which was necessary on each side of the fresnel in order to be centered. After drawing my marks and drilling out starting holes I cut using the slowest speed and made an extremely straight cut.

I opted to run my cables down the 2 sides of my box, so I cut some channels. Then on the fresnel closes to the lcd I cut the broader channel so that the wires from the lcd controller panel would pass through unmolested. Next I had to figure out some way to support my frames. As a quick and dirty fix I clamped all my frames down and drilled through with a 1/2" bit. These holes, 3 total, support the frames by dowel rods - originally I had planed on building the focusing box on the front, but changed my mind.

Once all my cuts were done, the fresnels were attached and bolt length was measured and the excess cut off with my dremel. Remove the bolts before cutting with the dremel, I got lazy and now have metal bits on my fresnel which I have to somehow remove - I'm thinking compressed air.

Originally I was using vinyl weather stripping, but my frames were too bulky. I'm unsure this method will work with 15" LCDs, I was using a 14" but now I am installing a 15".
 
great, thanks for posting but what exactly are the rubber gaskets and where can i get them?

the picture is not clear for me to tell what they really are shaped like or used for.


I'm also confused about the focus assembly. on http://www.diyprojectorcompany.com/ they kinda confuse you when they combine the optional mounting system along with the necessary information in the plans.

i can always move my projector box closer or further away so why build the complicated focusing options?

can someone tell me a simple way to install the focuser?
 
About a year ago my grandfather passed away, my father brought home box after box of fasteners, tools, and all kinds of half completed projects. The guy used to work for a furniture company and made all kinds of metal contraptions.

The spacers were in one of his boxes - they all have different company logos on them. Some say neoprene others "shur-seal" some are 3/8" some 1/2". I think they are just gaskets used for plumbing or other instances where things must be watertight.

I don't have a focusing box on the front of my projector, I didn't go with the lumenlab guide and instead read, carefully studied pictures up on the net, and asked a couple questions which guy grotke answered. The dowel rods were just leftovers from earlier plans.

I'm not entirely sure about these frames, I think the bolts and spacers may take up too much space - causing problem with getting the parts close enough together.
