I work at an elementary school and we would like to be able to use these.... see pic....
we want to hook up an ipod to them for music. They don't seem to be powered, they only have a xlr connection mounted to a pole.
I'm assuming it would be hooked up like this... 1.) Ipod using headphone connection to amp. 2.) Amp speaker wire out to xlr connector (i will probably have to make this part) 3.) and then plug that into the pole for connection to the speakers.

Ok i figured out today that they might be powered, so now i would like to know if they sell a cable that allows a microphone and aux ipod to be connected at the same time to the xlr jack in the pole?
Try to borrow a PA amplifier with XLR outputs to test the speakers, and start at very low volume. Don't expect them to be good enough for music!
With perfectly ordinary multimeter check the resistance on the XLR. (how many pins has it, by the way?) If it is high, in the tens of kilohms, them we're probably looking at an active (amplified) system (and it also tells you whether the inputs are balanced or unbalanced), if low, ohms or tens of ohms, probably a direct speaker (and we can find out how it's wired to the XLR; almost all of the six possible ways of connecting two wires to three pins have been used at some time) and if medium, a bit less than a kilohm, probably a 70 volt line system. A short click followed by infinite impedance implies a capacitor in series, and you've no idea of the sensitivity or expected voltage.

being that these where probably part of the original school pa/paging system if you can locate the main amp/control. you may find the xlr and speakers returned to this point which might make interfacing an other audio source easier.
