Horizontal mounting of large capacitors

Hi DIY Audio forum!

I hope you will accept a question from a DIY novice. I have decided to attempt to build a Class D amp from a kit bought from NCD. Looking for enclosures I have come across some really nice mono's from Hexateq AV. The catch is that they are rather small 🙁 So my question is: Can I mount the power supply modules vertically, such that the capacitors are horizontal, or can the capacitors not sustain their own weight.

Best,
Bitnissen

PS: I hope this is the right forum - if not please be patient with this newbie 😉

Hello bitnissen, you can mount the assembly so that the capacitors are horizontal, it won't hurt the capacitors. But I would recommend putting some sort of support under the caps if they are any distance above the bottom of the enclosure. If the caps are heavy enough, they will put stress on the PCB. You can make some supports out of blocks of wood or plastic. The advantage here is that you can attach some pipe strap to the sides of the support block and wrap it around the cap to the other side of the support block. This give more support and keeps things from vibrating.

Peace,

Dave
