hooking up a capacitor backwards results in?

Does it result in the speakers not receiving any input signal? I've used caps before for a simple 6db high pass filter, but this time I've having a problem. I'm trying to determine whether it it the CD Receiver's internal amp or a wiring/capacitor related issue. Thanks for any help.

No.
An easy check is done by simply looking if there is a signal before the cap. It could be open circuit. DMM in AC mode if you don't have a scope.
They only capacitors that have a polarity are electrolytes. Putting them backwards on a supply rail results in a fairly fast complete destruction of the cap.
Don't try it without safety glasses.
