Home audio 2-way JBL 2450SL?

Members, I am new to DIY Audio. So while this first post serves as my informal introduction it is also reaching out to members for your input in accomplishing my first speaker project.

I started off researching DIY speaker projects as far back as I can remember without any general direction then very recently lucked into a pair of 2450SL's with 2333 horns that look and test like new.

With the 2450's on hand it set the stage for two-ways (5 cu/ft) JBL's as my dream build! So now I'm only missing the balance of the build as in LF Drivers, Enclosure/Ports, Crossover Circuit, etc.

I do have my sights as well as a budget for either 2226H or 2035HPL's based on pieces of information gathered from these forums but still at a loss for implementation.

So here's my question, what drivers do I go with, what crossover design, enclosure, etc.?

These JBL's are intended for my home audio main two channel daily enjoyment and will be driven by my 5U4/6SL7/6V6GT PP DIY amp just completed. I am very proud of this accomplishment! (far more musical than anything I've ever owned or have ever listened to for that matter)

Hi Raymon. As the horn is not round, it is not immediately obvious what sized woofer to use. The choice I would make would depend on measured performance against a specific choice of crossover frequency. However it might be useful to go with something, eg a 15" woofer, and find where it fits best. Good luck with this.

You might be interested in higher efficiency. This way, you won't have to bring the tweeter down too far and you won't need too much power. This may mean a higher woofer resonance than some. I would accept this limitation because room modes tend to override the main speaker's very low frequency operation. Considering this, I find the performance of a closed box easier to integrate into a system.

Thank for your feedback AllenB. The 2226H and 2035HPL drivers are 15" with SPL of 97 and 98 respectively so not terribly inefficient. My little 6V6 PP tube amp is now driving ADS L810 II's with plenty of level.

What crossover is recommended I target;2-way-1st, 2nd, 3rd or forth order? B or LR circuits? I am anticipating the enclosure, baffle layout and porting to way in heavily as well. The wood construction is going to be a massive undertaking!

I've used a 6V6 single to run 200Hz and up with 110dB sensitivity. I didn't even need all that power 😉 The mid was only 98dB, but it wasn't playing half space..

It's not so simple that I can answer this straight. With complex measurements each question can be answered as the limitations of each driver are better understood. Then there is the question of how they integrate and what you can do about it.

If you are satisfied to experiment, then don't worry too much about this. Start with some second orders. Consider the relative placement of each driver regarding an assymetrical layout. Increase order if they play up outside their range.

If these are an integral part of your design, then you will know how much and where this is true.
