High quality transformer

Is 1500va @ 50v to much?
Yes, it sort of is. With that supply voltage I would think that 500VA is "normal audiophile overkill" rating and 800VA is way more than necessary for a class AB amp. I doubt going to 1500VA is going to do much except waste money and space. Also, 50VAC is going to be very close to the max. voltage as far as I can see from the schematic, so maybe consider going to 45VAC instead?

I am glad for the education. I thought going oversize would give the amplifier slightly more headroom because the power supply won't sag. Is this not true? I am learning this on diy projects so all the advice is definitely appreciated.
Original project in its power supply section suggests picking a lower voltage PT (45+45Vac?) If overspec 'd "because it will sag less"
Straight from the horse's mouth 😄

I was going by the build guide. I saw a 1200va 50 volt ac transformer. That would be 71 volts dc at the rails? Recommended for oversized. 430watts @ 4 ohms. This is where I obtained my information. I also see manufacturers of amplifiers like Parasound have large va and capacitance for their power supply. Is this just a sales gimmick?

Is this just a sales gimmick?
No. They use the transformers that give the sound they want. In the case of Pass Labs HPA-1 it was reported by them that they went through six prototype power transformers before they got to a version they liked. According to people who know, it does have an effect on the sound of that particular circuit.

Other amplifier circuits may be different though, so its not always better to randomly throw in oversized transformers just because someone else did. Also, even if a little bit oversized can be good in some cases, going too far with oversizing can sound worse.
