hi,
i'm a massive newbie to audio but not really to electronics. if anyone could point me in the right direction for some basics info, that help would be much appreciated.

Others may disagree, but I have found Rod Elliott's material to be excellent for getting a good overview - perhaps start here, DIY Audio Articles, note there is a 'beginner's' section further down the page.

Everything on that site is good value, and as a nice touch he's from our part of the world ... 🙂
