Hertz HSK 165 tweeters loud, and some door rattles

Hey there,

I just installed a pair of Hertz HSK 165 with an Alpine MRX-V70 Amp in my 2011 Lancer. Im having a few issues that I was hoping to get some feedback on.

The tweeters are incredibly bright, even after setting the passive crossover for -2db. I read in other threads suggestions about angling them away, but the way that the bracket in the car is, you cant really change the direction of them. I might try to get some spacers for the screws, but I don't think ill be able to change the way they are facing without re-engineering the way its mounted.

After placing a few pieces of tissue paper (as suggested in another thread) it's worlds better. I went from almost instant ear fatigue to being pretty pleased with the sound. the treble is still on -2 on my headunit to prevent some piercing peaks, and I would like to have that on 0 if possible. Is there anything better suited for this, like speaker cloth? Putting toilet paper over my 450 dollar speakers feels pretty ghetto 😛

Last, I had my doors professionally sound deadened, they did the entire door in hushmat. However the lancer door panels are all plastic, and the area around the speaker rattles like crazy at certain frequencies. If I apply pressure against the plastic, the speakers hit like a champ, but otherwise the rattle is as loud as the speaker >.< What can i use to fill in some very small gaps between the plastic? Should I bring it back to the installers and ask them to fix the plastic rattles? Im thinking some kind of thick glue or molding would be perfect to solve this. Anything I can pick up at a hardware store? Thanks!

It is kind of suprising that the manufacturer didn't pad (decrease) the tweeters so they would be more in alingment with the woofer's output. You can try changing the tweeters direction to what is called off axis. Normally this will result in a more rolled off top end. The other method might be to install a pad to bring the level down further. You must use 2 resistors on each tweeter. If you just stick a resistor in line, the crossover point will be moved because you have changed the tweeters impedance. You can buy some resistors from RS or Ebay. Maybe start out with 2 ohms up to maybe 8 ohms. 2-5 watt should do it. A better remedy than tissue. Take alook at the attachment. Also do a net search for tweeter pad.

I believe that manual says to point the tweeters at the opposite side of the car, and its a little hard to tell, but it seems like the stock tweeters that were replaced were already pointed at the adjacent seat, and like I said, I can't do much to point them elsewhere. I'll try to get some decent pictures of the set up. regardless, the new tweeters are obviously much more sensitive. I will look into doing an L-pad.

Also, I'm pretty proud of solving some of the bigger rattles with some DAP Auto Marine Sealant I got from home depot for like 5 dollars. I just filled in the cracks around the speaker grill and some other plastic gaps, But now that I've solved some of those, I'm noticing 2 things:

The door handle rattles against the lock knob. Any suggestions? can't use sealant 😛

The plastic over the door is rattling against the actual door frame. I'm going to point this out to the shop and try to get them to fix that area. I mean thats why I got it 😛
