I'm an old guy with lousy hearing and little knowledge in audio electronics. To watch TV I have to use wireless headphones. Right now I use Sony bluetooth headphones connected to my Samsung TV. Trouble is every time I need to use them I have to click and scroll through several steps (25 clicks) to connect. Secondly, the bluetooth signal range is awful. If I wander far from the TV I lose the signal and have to go through the whole connection process again. I want to get an audio transmitter that will connect to the TV from an optical port. Am I correct in thinking that I will only have to pick up the headphones from the pedestal and turn them on to listen and the signal range will be much improved? The greater the range the better. And lastly, if I connect the transmitter to the optical port will the TV speakers be disabled? I don't want that. I will be grateful for suggestions..
Hi and welcome to the forum!
So, you're having trouble pairing your bluetooth headphones to your TV, and have limited range when paired.
Not really my area of expertise, but I think you are looking for a bluetooth transmitter like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QV77YI...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
It includes a cable for connecting to the TV's optical (Toslink) output. Range is typically 10 m.
It would appear to pair automatically with your headphones when you switch them on, and your TV speakers would not be disabled.
There is a technical standard to which your bluetooth headphones must adhere in order to pair with this device: "HomeSpot transmitter uses the Bluetooth v2.1 Secured Simple Pairing (SSP) for pairing and connection. Any Bluetooth earbuds that supports SSP should be compatible with it."
So, I can't guarantee compatibility with your headphones, but, at the price, there's not a lot to lose.

There used to be "dumb" radio headphones. Worked like a tiny FM transmitter and receiver, but on an odd frequency. No "pairing", no "re-link".
Dunno if they still make those. They do make tiny FM transmitters, and maybe still FM-Radio headphones? Except for getting them on the same channel, they are simple.
Oh, geez. They make FM headphones for workmen. Carpenters can't work in silence. There's real-rugged HPs from tool-brands for $60; also domestic or jogger-grade for $20. A thing called CZE05B $50-$90 seems to be go-to transmitter for small churches' pandemic drive-in services.
These were also made as optical, but you have to stay in-sight of the TV (actually the transmitter box). I used a pair to watch Forever Knight after midnight, after the rest of the house went to bed.

Maybe this:
Wireless TV Headphones Home Headset for TV Watching,TV Ears Microphone 5 in 1 Functions
20 bucks
It is not clear if this is dumb radio, a 2.4GHz link (usually speedy), or a BluTooth (however there is a super-similar model "BlueTooth 5.0").
