help with tweeter attenuation

I'm hoping the collective wisdom of this site can help me with a new toy. I just received a pair of these

so that I can fiddle with tweeter attenuation and realized that I'm unsure how to hook them up. I plan on using them after the passive x-over on the tweeter only, so there's a + and a - connection. What's the third spade connector for? How do I know if I'm using correct polarity?

Thanks for the help Rodd. The last one describes my situation perfectly. I'll have a go at it in the next few days and see how it turns out.
