I'm designing/building a box for a Sundown E8v5D4 sub for a friends 2013 Silverado. My goal is to fit a ported box under 1/2 of the back seat. I estimate I can only get about 0.5 cu ft of usable volume not counting the port and driver volume. The problem is length of the port. Even with a port area of 8.4 sq in I'm having to drive the tuning frequency up to about 40 hz to fit a rectangular port in the space. Is this a problem with this driver? Also, is it ok to have 2 90 degree bends in a rectangular port - something I may be able to do. Right now, I only have one. The end user is a musician not interested in SPL. He just want some "bottom end reinforcement"
Any other experience or advice for optimizing a box for this driver is appreciated. I've designed many boxes, just not familiar with this driver or in optimizing small boxes.
I'm using Unibox for the box design.
TIA,
Jim

The specs I pulled up on their site suggests to me that it's a sub intended for a very small sealed box, with an F3 of 55hz, which is plenty good for auto with cabin gain and all. I wouldn't port it. Sealed boxes are the way to go in a vehicle, imo.

I did a box for a Sundown SA-8 a couple years ago. It was for behind the seat of a small pickup. This is how I did the port, it may at least give you an idea:

+2 to Waboo and straight8s on sealed - the manufacturer usually provides recommended volumes for sealed as well as vented.
At least one of the "advantages" of sealed designs is that they're often very small for this type of driver - sometimes not as large as the carton they're shipped in.
Shoehorning as massive a piece as this into the area under a seat can be in interesting project.

Thanks for all the help. I was able to get a vented box in the space I have. I have not built but I have a design on paper that is about .77 cu ft total with about a 1/3 of this the port volume. I dropped down to an 8 sq in port and would up with a tuning freq around 38 hz and 3 db peak around 43 hz. So I'm happy with what I have on paper. I'll post a picture once I build.
