i'm new to the forum and i'm looking for some help.
i just bought a cheap cd player for the garage (Nexxtech 5). of cource when i tried it out it does not work.
the player powers up and the tray just spins. i opened it up, everything physically looks ok. i took the curcuit board out that drives the spinning tray. it consists of a motor, a magnetic swicth, a photo eye, and 2 diodes. i believe my problem is in here. my question is how do i test the magnetic switch and how do i test the photo eye?
also, do you think i'm on the right path to fixing this?
any help would greatly be appriciated.
thanks in advance,
kuby

kuby,
Welcome. 🙂
The player is unknown to me but first thing to do is clean the lens with a little cotton stick. Don't use alcohol.
Could you post a picture of that magnetic switch, diodes and photo eye along with a overall view of the innards?

Sorry for bad english.
First. You must chek power unit, fuzes, power cables.
When you insert a disk, lens must going up and down. You can see a laser light in a dark, but be carefully with you eyes, do not see straight on lens. If this all ok. You need to chek motor, resistance must be 11 ohm and higher. Whery often damaged a cable, that connecting a mechanics and electronics.
Otherwise, problem in electronic module.
There are very many informations in the internet about repairing cd players, use searching systems.

a little more detail;
when you plug the unit into the outlet nothing happens. i press power and the drawer moves a little then the carousel motor kicks in and starts rotating and won't stop until i unplug the cd player. there are 2 magnetic switches on the drawer circuit, they seem to work becuase when i manually rotate the drawer arm, i can find the spot where the carousel motor kicks in. once the carousel motor starts it won't stop. that's why i think there is something wrong with the photo eye or the magnetic switch on the carousel circuit board.
thanks in advance

kuby,
First off, you can safely assume that all blank copper traces and empty holes on the PCB never contained any part.
This looks like a rather cheaply made player but nonetheless worth a few experiments to gain some knowledge.
You should be able to test the photo sensors simply by breaking the light bundle with a piece of paper and see if a motor responds.
When you say: 'The tray just spins', do you mean that the tray opens and closes? If so, the whole photo sensor circuitry will be working fine.
From there on, you proceed with digifun's post. Does the laser work, does the disc spin...
Does it read the TOC? (Table of content) on the disc. What happens on the display?
Error message? 0:00:00?
Edit: we posted simultaneously. I'll first read what you said.

There is most likely nothing wrong with the magnetic switches and photo sensors.
Your deck is mechanically not well aligned. Without service manual, this will be a trial and error procedure until the unit behaves as it should. Try to get a grip on how the mechanics behave when rotating the wheels step by step.

when i put a piece of paper over the photo and / or put a piece of cardboard through the magnetic swith, nothing happens.
when i talked about the tray spinning. i meant the 5 disc tray just spins, the drawer does not go in or out.
i have not physically put a disc into the cd slot to see if it would read it because the the tray keeps going around and would physically hit it.
i can't figure out why i can get the tray to spin and it won't stop. i do believe that if there are no disc in the tray, the tray should make 1 complete revolution (see that nothing is in the trays) then stop in the ready position. it just doesn't seem to be ready anything.
thanks

There must be something that tells the tray to stop repeating the procedure.
It could be the photo sensor or even a mechanical switch.
I'm sorry not being able to help more as this is a complete unknown CD player to me. I hope someone encountered the same player/problem to help you out.
