Help to build a custom set of speakers

Good evening,

My name is Phoebe and the daughter of the user 'Lost for Words'.

I am writing to you now to ask for some help with building a custom set of cone speakers that was started by my dad.

My dad was an avid tinkerer and has, probably for most of my 29 years of existing, been building a set of speakers of some variety. He took a lot of pride and interest in them and was very engaged on this forum. Earlier in the year my dad very sadly passed away quite suddenly and I promised him I would try and finish his speakers for him.

Sadly I am not like my dad and do not have the wisdom nor talent to embark on such a thing so I've come here in the search of some help. In essence I would ideally like to get these speakers finished not least because I promised I would but also because I do not have a clue how to do so. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I could do this, or better yet, would be willing to build them for me?

Apologies if this is not the usual kind of post but I thought it was worth a try asking the experts!

Yours hopefully,
Phoebe

Hi Phoebe.
Sorry for your loss.

There are several sub forums for speakers here, inhabited by some incredibly smart people.
If you can provide us with as much information as possible, it will make it easier for us to help you 🙂

Brands or part numbers, photos are always good too if possible.

Hello Phoebe,
Sorry to hear about your Father.

If you left click LostForWords in the left hand column of page you have a choice box open, one of which is find more posts. Doing this suggests your father was doing something with a speaker known as a 166, which I am sure others will know about, and when they wake up will provide further input.

As it suggests a full range design, which usually means one loudspeaker per cabinet it could be relatively simple to complete.
As Old'nCranky suggests Photos are probably the way to provide as much information as quickly as possible.

Following rayminds suggestion points to your father asking questions about the Austin A166. This is one of the very best horn designs for the Fostex FE166e/En. It is not the easiest build.

Ron Clarke Horns Here with Fostex FE168e∑.

A166 reflector (with holes in it?)
Purpose of "stuffing" an Austin a166?
Voice coil orientation for full range drivers
Felt or polythene covered fibre glass
Are duct seal, felt wrapping and earthed chassis measurable

From the last question it is clear he has seen some of my work.

Do you have the drivers already: https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-6-fullrange/fostex-fe166en-6.5-full-range/

Althou not as optimal, you might also look at the Frugel-Horn XL. It is an easier build and flat-paks can be had in Europe from KJF Audio in Kent. If you lack woodworking skills or tools this may be the way to go. The curved mouth on the Frugel-Horns is directly from the Ron’s work on Austin A126/166.

His other interest seems to have been mono-block tube amps. The FE166 really likes higher output impedance amps.

Thank you so so much for getting back to me, I very much appreciate it and it has certainly made me a bit happier on this cold Thursday evening!

Apologies for not including more helpful details in my first post. Attached is a picture of one of the speaker cabinets which looks very much like the one planet10 linked to. I believe we have the parts for the inside (the Fostex speaker looks incredible familiar).

As it stands I have the cabinets and what I think are if not all, most of, the parts to fit the speakers together. What would you suggest - does anyone know who could build them for me?

Yes, that sure looks like Austin A166. That speaker looks like it only needs a second side, the deflector, the supraBaffle, some sort of finish, and the driver. I question the amount of damping in the Air Cavity thou. All the hardest parts look done.

Well worth finishing, the speaker, driven by a suitabel amp, will bring joy to you and your family.

What assocoated kit do you have?

Sorry for the long reply time. It took some time to commandeer a friend (read: beg plead and bribe) to help me unbox all the stuff and photograph.

Attached is a fairly exhaustive itinerary of all the various pieces of kit my dad had.

Does anyone have any ideas about how I get them built? It looks like he has if not all, most of the pieces but I need to commission someone to make them.

All suggestions very helpful! I'm in southwest London.

Thanks for all your help

Phoebe

Look like you've suitable drivers there, Fostex FE166ES-R,
and a HiVi RT1C-A Planar tweeter if 2 way is an option.
Planet10's probably the best man to ask about this.

Most of the rest of the components look like another project, an amplifier,
although there should be suitable caps for a crossover.
