HELP: Rotel RA-985BX Amp sound from only one speaker

Hi,

New to the forum and hifi audio. I recently picked up an amp and it only puts out sound from the right speaker. I've swapped the speaker wires and found that it is due to something not working on the amp rather than the speaker or the cables.

That said, I wanted to check with experts more knowledgeable than I. Is this a fuse issue? Any help would be appreciated.
Ken

If you dont have a dmm and a basic understanding of electronics, take it to a repairer.
Or take it back to the seller for a refund.

Sorry if that seems rude, it isn't meant to be.
But every other week a new guy comes along and thinks it's just a fuse, it can't be that hard to fix something I bought for $5.

Hi Ken,
This could be many things. I haven't looked at the schematic, but it may even be a speaker relay (in the protection network). I'm assuming that you have checked fuses.

One thing about fuses. If it is blown with just a little "puff" mark on the glass, go ahead and replace it. If it made the glass all silver or black, do not replace the fuse as it is a high energy fault. Replacing the fuse will only extend the damage and up the repair bill.

About service people. I worry about the general inability for many to even solder properly. The person you want will be an older person, probably working from home these days and only does audio. You don't want a computer or TV repair person! And no, a friend or neighbour who "knows something about electronics" will probably make things worse despite best intentions. So if you need someone to service it, get it to them with all the clues intact, and that will lower the repair bill. If someone has been in there, be honest with them. That will also lower the final bill.

Where are you located, maybe there is someone close to you who is qualified to work on your amplifier.

Best, Chris
