hello,
i have a proxima 5900. basically i wanted to know what this device on top of the light housing is. it also seems to be connected straight into the mains live, then to the powerboard.
it has us-603 written on it and i googled it and found this link on it
http://www.asahikeiki.co.jp/busine_e/us603_e.html
but i have no idea what it means. it also has a lever on top of it that goes up and down.
what would happen if i removed it. please help. thanx in adavnce.

Looks like a thermal switch, its probably designed to open if the lamp cooling should fail. Don't know the temperature, with projector lamps the current rating for a replacement thermoswitch would be an issue.
thanx but i really need to know what would happen if i removed it.
also its written at the bottom....

This thermal protector is most likely in series with the mains.
What do you think happens when you interrupt the mains? Correct...nothing.
When you bypass it, you'll lose its protecting function.

thanx for the reply guys guys. i spoke to someone else about it and they claimed it added resistence to the mains. i.e. lowering the voltage . and as you said cuts out if the temp gets too high.
so if i remove it wont i need to add a resistor? thanx guys

The data sheet says it adds 50 milliohms, about the same as a piece of wire. If you remove it you will not need to add a resistor. It is of course normally closed so it can be replaced by a short.dj_holmes said:thanx for the reply guys guys. i spoke to someone else about it and they claimed it added resistence to the mains. i.e. lowering the voltage . and as you said cuts out if the temp gets too high.

The device is there to prevent fire, why do you need to eliminate it?
hermanv is very correct. Don't remove it. You wouldn't remove a fuse in a circuit although it adds a bit of resistance would you?

thanx guys. i removed it and about 5 seconds later the whole projector blew up!!!!
it made a very loud buzzing sound then blew the fuse in my house. i was lucky i was not killed!!! my hand was very near the wires!!
basically the because i modded my pj i took out the whole ballast but the wires that come from the board to the ballast was still present. after the accident i looked at the wires and at the contacts of the connects they had burnt! not shorted just burnt! and all i did was bypass the thingy thing.
its a good thing i only paid £1 for it and £15 delivery! ooh my life also!
thanx again for help guys
(i was getting a hlf decent picture from 50w halegon
