Hi,
I would like to build a 2 way speaker. I'm not looking for much loudness, but I would like to have a reasonably good bass response, and I would prefer a closed box to have a tighter bass.
I have a pair of speakers I've built in the past for a very small room using a pair of Visaton KT100V in a 4L enclosure and I'm really satisfied of their sound, but I would prefer to have something a bit more louder.
I would like to use something with a similar response but a bit bigger, like a 5", but they look quite unique in their low frequency response. There is much more available in a 6.5" size, but that starts to become a bit big, so it won't get the wife approval.
Do you have any suggestion? By the way, why aren't the KT100V much used in DIY projects?

A Peerless SDS-160F25PR01-08 or an Dayton RS180-8 could do that. Or maybe a SB Acoustics SB17NRX2C35-4 or a Tang Band W6-1721 and there are more options probally that i don't know (or i left out because they are very expensive). But a midbass will never go very low, certainly not sealed. Best is to add a (sealed) subwoofer if you want a real low bass.
And that visaton is not used because of the reasons you say, to small to be loud and low.

whats your budget and music preference, room size, amplifier etc?
what about Seas Loki coaxial? plenty of waf if you drop the bass reflex.

Thank you for all your suggestions!
The Peerless looks interesting, the response would be similar to the KT100, but with much more dBs available (and is also cheaper!). The lateral cut would also allow me to keep the speaker narrow.
I was also giving a look at a Monacor SP-150, but their data is seems completely inconsistent, so I don't know what I could obtain.
My room is approximately 7x4m, but speakers will be placed on one half of the long wall (half of the room is occupied by a table, the other half is used for listening musing and watching TV). I need not to be too loud because I live in an apartment and I can't disturb too much my neighbors.

Do you have a suggestion for a tweeter to add? I would like to go for an active crossover, both for fun and because I find it easier to play with a DSP than tuning a filter, so I think I don't need to match the sensitivity, just be sure to have a wide enough BW and enough loudness, right?
I used a Vifa BC25TG with the Peerless SDS160 in a two way with passive crossover; the XO wasn't quite right but it sounded OK, although it was a vented floor stander with larger volume. The quality and 'sound' of the drivers is well matched. Bass was very good.
The SDS160 has also been combined with the Vifa TC7 full range driver in a sealed cabinet, "The Vagrant Monitor", in the Parts Express Project Gallery: The Vagrant Monitor | Parts Express Project Gallery

Thank you. BC25TG looks difficult to source, I've seen XT25SC90-04 that looks very interesting and not too expensive. What do you think about it?
The small fullrange option like TC7 is also interesting, I have just some doubt about directivity: it seems like in the high frequency even a 2.5" speaker will be quite focused, is it a problem?

Depending where you live, the BC25TG is available from Parts Express in the US or in the product link in the post above.
I've used both the BC25 and the XT25 in various projects, the XT has perhaps slightly more detail; however, the crossovers in the speakers are quite different and that affects the sound. Here (Oz) the BC is quite a bit cheaper; also, it seems to need fewer crossover parts to make it sound good.
Paul Carmody used the BC25 in his well known Classix II, Classix 2.5 and Hitmaker speakers, all of which are very popular builds.
I haven't seen any designs with the XT25 and the SDS160; Parts Express Tech Talk has a project with the XT and the 5" Peerless SDS but that probably wouldn't give you enough output for your size room.
The TC7 is a very well regarded, low distortion driver, I haven't used it yet but it seems like the dome or ring tweeters will have wider dispersion. Whether or not that matters depends on how you listen. A Peerless/TC7 combo appeals to my lazy side as the drivers can both be flush mounted.
