Hi folks, this is uncharted territory for me, I am looking for a replacement for the HiVi M12 drivers, spec here... Product information:M12 Bass-Midrange
A short circuit at my speaker terminals probably caused by my cat, has destroyed one of the drivers. For a little background, I purchased the speakers from ebay when they were almost new, the chap that built them had spent almost £1800 on materials alone, this includes paying Wilmslow £500 having the cabinets made. Now I won these for £400, i think this was a bargain considering the cost of parts including Clarity caps, so I would really like to keep as much as possible from the original design but I realise I am asking a lot and change is inevitable. The design was ported, having OB Hawthorne Augies I really didnt like the bass, so Ive been running them sealed along side the Hawthornes, however I would like to get rid of the Augies, its a complicated setup and one you never stop fiddling with as the OB's have there own plate amps with volume etc. What I would really like is a pair of replacement 12" drivers that will give the deepest tightest punchy bass of all time and let every macro detail through allowing a holographic 3 dimensional sound stage in my tiny lounge. Although I have no clue about speaker design I know thats not possible, I just dont want to go the other way and slap a couple of 12" drivers in for the sake of preventing my cat from climbing in the big hole that's there right now. 🙂 I understand the pros and cons of ports vs sealed so I know I cant have cake..... but these speakers are pretty magic at everything apart from the woofers, I have to at least ask if there are some magic drivers out there that will give better results than I have, thats probably not too difficult considering I strangled the **** out of the design goal.
I have considered just replacing the driver like for like but i can only find one in Italy and they want 215 euros for it, so I figure why not take the opportunity to fix the only thing im not happy about....
I am open to any suggestions for using other bits of the existing system, like I toyed with running the M12s active using the plate amps, these are XTZ Sub Amp 1's, I guess that means a xover re design though, I guess it will need some change for a new driver anyway, here are the rest of the specs....
Its an MTM design using 2x HiVi M5a's Overview of M5a Drivers_HiVi,Inc and one FOUNTEK NEOCD3.0 RIBBON TWEETER Fountek NeoCD3.0 Ribbon Tweeter Black Here is the xover although I believe he installed notch filters after many measurement sessions. I fear that the current box volume will be far too small for me to get anywhere near my dream with a sealed box but thats why I am here, I put the same question to Wilmslow but they probably prefer selling parts than helping idiots like me and I get it...
I dont know why that pic is on its side, I rotated and saved it before uploading.... I am probably going to put most people off with such a big post so if you got to the end thanks for looking, I figure you need a lot of details to get the whys and what nots..
