Help and advice on rear projector TV

I was watching TV tonight suddenly the screen changed to display only green colour and after a minute or so it changed to blue colour I can still see the picture clearly, so I thought it was the cable company passing bad signal, then I smell something burning, you know the kind of electronic burning smell, some thing fried inside the TV for sure.

The TV is a Sony 61 inch rear projector TV just about 5 years old. It came with two years warranty and I bought the extended warranty for additional 2 years, so I am out of luck for this one. My question for the experts here in the forum is that I need some suggestion of what the problem may be and what kind of cost it may involve to call some service company to do in house repair. Is it possible for me to fix it myself if my suspicion is correct that the red light is burnt/blown, for my kids use it a lot. I would say the TV is on average 13 hours a day. Would that be a good idea to replace all 3 colour bulbs for the green and blue light may have the same life length. Are these parts expensive? any price range idea?

Thank you for any suggestion for course of action.

Best Regards,
Chris

It would be best to have some type of professional coem and evaluate the damage. One of the CRT's porbably is burned out. Different tubes last for different times, I'm pretty sure a technician could tell by looking at them how long they have left. I don't know about TVs, but for front CRT projectors the tubes start at a couple hundred dollars and the price just goes up from there.

Hi,

Service came in and took the convergence board away, he said that all 3 colour guns are fine but something on that board fried may be due to a leaky cap and the burning smell might well be a resistor cooked. The cost to fix the board estimated just over $500cdn plus tax provided he has the right parts in his shop, at least two days.

Chris

PS what are those STK thingies, are they expensive? how much?

The STK-IC´s are integrated video-"power"-amplifiers.
There´s usually one on each CRT-PCB so for each cathode.

From your fault description they are not defect so why you´re asking ? Did the technicians mention them ?
Or dou you mean another STK on the convergence board?

If you need the price I can look it up for you but need the exact model number (like Sony KP-61PS2).

Cheers
Jens

This is what I read on the net that's why I asked, the technician said that there are two STK chips on that board he took from the TV.

QUESTION NO. P413-9: Sony KP53XBR35 projection TV, the convergence is perfect in center of screen but the outer edges are all out of wack -All three guns. Replaced two blown 3.15 fuses on the D board but no help.
Anytime those fuses are bad you MUST replace both of the STK`s on the convergence board. Do not check, just replace them both at the same time (they are not cheap).
QUESTION NO. P54-9: Sony krp-46ex20 projection TV has a convergence problem. The screen has red, blue and yellow shadowing. Tried to center picture and the r h and r v do not work.
resolder convergence ic's. if that does not work, change (STK-xxxx).
QUESTION NO. P216-4: Sony KP-53V15 rear projection TV. Sudden appearance of severe pincushion and color misalignment around the edges of the screen. The edges look like that are pulled in. Picture appears fine and aligned in the center of the screen. Reception and all colors are fine. The problem persisted since it appeared. Occasional flicker of the entire screen image.
Check the fuses on the convergence panel, also change the converergence output devices STK-XXXX, then check the board throughly for ring cracks ar the regulators and controls. Been finding a lot of these lately; also may have a pincuahion output problem but suggest trying the convergence fixes first.

Question No P54-9 describe very close to my problem

Chris

Question NoP54-9 describes a typical convergence problem.
The colours are all there at the same time but there is no perfect congruence.

If certain colours just go and come back again it´s not really convergence problem but of course it still might be a fault on the convergence board cause the R,G,B-signals are going through that PCB to the main video amplifiers.

Indeed it could be only dry solder joints at the PCB-connectors or at the STK´s themselves which is a standard fault with Thomson rear projectors for example.
Some of the STK´s get quite hot and cause commercial equipment like this is not as properly cooled as Passlabs products it develops those dry solder joints after some years.
