Greetings.
I don't know much about audio other than it makes music sound really good.
I want more of that. I like to cobble things together so it seems like I should be involved here. I like to make old things work well again, and to find re-uses and mis-uses for hoarded raw materials. Y'all are an awful lot smarter about this stuff than I am so it may be a long while before I am much of a contributor.
I have a mechanical engineering degree, and I am not much better than mildly dangerous with electricity. I have a basic understanding, but the head aches with equations bigger than ohms law. I can use a scope, if it is digital.
I am building a lab to test solar thermal water heaters at NC State University. I get to do machine design, devise test and data acquisition systems, weld and braze steel and copper, simple machine work, a little metrology. It is fun. Since our funding is very limited I have a habit of visiting the university surplus warehouse. Some genius decided that when we have to clean out labs and offices here, that nothing can be thrown away, thus THERE MUST BE PAPERWORK. So the surplus system was created to create a reason for paperwork. The upside is that all these goodies (and there are a lot and some of it very cool stuff - Tek 549 anyone?) can be transferred to other departments at no cost other than paperwork. This winter I scavenged a Sanyo Pre-amp in hopes of putting together a stereo for the lab. Then a Crown D-75A showed up (I had no idea that ugly brick was going to be so nice). Then a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 5's. This sounds really nice and now I can't tolerate my home lowfi and have to do something about it.
I think the Sansui SP-3500's must go. Something smaller and better like Polk Audio 5' or 7's. (I would be a fool for a monitor 10 or 12 set if it happened.) I have a Scott 325R that is getting long in the tooth and I cadged a Crown D-75A for myself on eBay for $88! There are some mods that may make that a bit better. I could see getting at lease one more D-75A.
And I need a pre-amp. I think I would like to build one, scratch or a kit. SS not tubes. Probably mess around with gainclones a bit, too. I like all the fun packaging that gainclone folks are into. I could see myself building speaker cabinets, but I know my honeydo list won't support that for a while.
Well, that is me and my little hifi aspirations.

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum. You should find plenty to keep you busy.
I'm about an hour and 1/2 down I-40 from you.

Thanks for greetings. Crown just shared the schematics for the D75A. I am planning to mod it some. There was a guy Mark Deneen (Juicy Music) that modded a D45, better opamp, some caps, tweaked impedence for the tube pre-amp he wanted to use. I am going to try his approach after I listen to my "new" one for a while.
I need to do something about not having a pre-amp to start. I am interested in a SS kit, but maybe eBay will provide more quickly.
Pano, You can just drop by the Solar Center lab most days (behind the Solar House on the State campus) in case you ever have time to burn.
