I have been using a pair of Linn Isobarik DMS speakers for some time now and to be honest, although dated I really enjoy the sound that they create. However, I have often wondered what planar, ribbon and electrostatic speakers sound like by comparison, so I am going to start by building a pair based around a couple of NEO 8 planar drivers that I aquired for a good price. My initial plan was to use these up to about 9-10kHz (which avoids this drivers 12kHz peak) and then crossover to a ribbon tweeter above this. (a pair of Monacor ribbons-again for a good price) For the bass........ well this is as yet to be determined as this is where I need some help. The ribbons have an efficiency of 98db, the NEO 8 are 94db so the bass drivers (normal technology) should be what? Do I go for high efficiency bass drivers to match the mid and treble or should I use attenuation using the crossover to bring the mid/high down to the bass driver. I would like to retain the bass capabilities of the Isobariks, if not more so without increasing the cabinet size. The lower crossover point would depend on the bass drivers chosen but initially I thought about in the region of 750Hz. I have to say after many hours spent reading through this forum I am in awe of the talent that is "out there" so this why I am asking for advice for this project...... I know that any advice that you will give me will be excellent. Many thanks.
