I haven't seen this in these forums...
This is an interesting article and it describes the Hafler quad circuits, plus others. Pretty simple actually.

As it turns out I got four matching speakers laying around and the amps to drive them ( four Acoustic Energy AE1s and a bunch of amps...)... I was thinking of trying something like this is my office. I mean, I got two quad receivers but they are huge and won't fit on my desk... but a small decoder like the ones he described might be a fun project.

I now know that the Hafler decoder circuit is just a simple passive circuit for deriving 4ch sound from a 2ch source. Please ignore my previous post.
Hafler quad is pretty similar to Dolby Surround. Set your BD/DVD/UHD/media player for 2-channel output, and the rear channel info should be encoded so as to be compatible with the Hafler circuit.

I tried the Hafler decoder back in the vinyl days. It was not listenable, the quad channels were mostly surface noise.
Not with digital sources.I tried the Hafler decoder back in the vinyl days. It was not listenable, the quad channels were mostly surface noise.
I'm just thinking of setting up a toy here... if I wanted to use a decoder, I could dig out the old Sony EP9ES from the closet and build something around it... or I already have a 7.0 in the den with a pre-pro....
Just noticed I got speakers and amps gathering dust and I figure it'd be fun to play around with my home office. Besides, I already have two complete receiver set ups ( with QS, SQ and CD4 decoders and wired remotes... don't want to go there for the time being.).
Sources will be digital, going through a high-rez DAC. So, I figured a small box would be fun to play with, no need for a delay to start with...
