Just in case people missed it in the lounge forum, The Absolute Sound's founder has died. Here is Michael Fremer's write up.
Mega-thanks, HollowState --- I just found your post among the cornucopia of other stuff.
At age 66 currently, the first issue of TAS I glommed onto was around 1983. Some superb writers and lots of sweat equity by extremely dedicated people, many of whom were never paid in any sort of timely way, but toiled on happily anyway.
I recall contributor Steven Stone's survey of (either) arms or pre-amps -- and how he had finally to limit the set-ups by which each contender was evaluated. His reason for NOT trying to rank all possible iterations? "That way madness lies . . ."
Opinionated whippersnappers who land here on DIY (and immediately deliver chesty dicta to audio veterans) would sound less like egotistical bozos if they first read a healthy dose of HP's contributions, in a pioneering life dedicated to the joy of music.
