Greetings,

During the 1960s, Ivan Illich hypothesized that a Rolodex and a phone allowed access to distributed knowledge that would increase independence through interdependence. Despite (and in part because of) increases in the technology of communication Illich’s idea has failed to come to pass. Still, it is a noble effort, an effort I support, and an effort I believe this community is part of.

I hope I have something to offer to this distributed knowledge network, but it goes without saying that you will be the judge of that. I have been seriously working with acoustics and loudspeakers for about 25 years (before 1978 I would say my work was less than serious). In 1984, Don Spangler and I published an article in Speaker Builder on modifying the Strathern ribbon driver. Then and now I think, design, and test in the world of transients (or impulses). My goal is neutral (or natural) sound reproduction that is more software than hardware dependent. With every change in recording, the “sound” of your system should change.

While I have become proficient at designing crossovers, my ideal is a loudspeaker without crossovers. I have been playing with full-range drivers since the 1980s (the Strathern fell short of being a full-range driver candidate), and have just finished work on a 2-inch cone driver with acceptable resonance structure and frequency response from 130 Hz to 23 kHz, plus or minus 3 db. It will still have to be crossed over to a subwoofer, but if you have to have a crossover, the sub 200s are good frequencies to work with. My current project is modifications to a linear array design using this driver so I make a loudspeaker that will play loudly yet remain transiently coherent.

My personal quirks are that I like sealed cabinets (infinite baffles), and I shy away from using icons.

Hi Mark
Looking at your profile, people like you are exactly what we need here: designers with a philosophical view and a feeling for good sound and new approaches. 😎

Welcome to the forum.
The guys in the speaker section will love this.🙂

/Hugo - not afraid to use icons now and then. 😉
