I'm still building my pj, but found a deal on a davis powerbeam v dlp projector at a show. it's a 800x600 500 lumen dlp projector with a good lamp i found for $60 at the Trenton COmputer Festival.
I figured for the price it would have a bad lamp and i'd buy one when i got around to affording it. But you know how it is, I took it to my shop and started her up.
The light came on and showed an image for 10 seconds then the light went out. The bulb is good. So now i need to figure out why it's dhutting off the light.
My thought's are following 2 lines.
One there's a faulty thermal shut off somewhere inside it that needs to be replaced or bypassed
.
Or the ballast module for the lamp is faulty. if it's the latter there's enough room to retro fit a different light source because i doubt I'll be able to find another ballast unit. It runs a 270watt mh bulb.
Any thoughts?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I highly doubt that projector is actually a DLP, I think the "DLP" is some other acronym, from before actual DLP even existed....

That is a DLP 😉
Dissident, check to make sure the dust filters are all clean and make sure all of the fans are working, bypassing a thermal switch should be the very last resort. Also check the lamp life.

Ya its an old one buddy, unfortunatley back then they wernt much chop and yet wer pricey as hell.

One of my first thought was perhaps the rated bulb life was over and the software in the pj was turning it off. trouble is i cant see the lamp life meter. It's on the setup menu, and i have to navigate to it. never have enough time to get there and reset it before the lamp goes out.
Yeah apparently it went for something like $5300 when new. More than my first car. And my second car combined actually 😉
MY dust filters look sgood if a little bit dusty. Don't think thats the problem as it moves a lot of air, also think the fans are good for the same reason. It has 3 fams in it, 2 that look like 80mm on the sides and a big one on top. maybe 120mm. all three are covered by a grate so it's near impossible to see when on.
I got ther manual for it ,downloaded from somewhere online (I forget I was in one of those modes where you have 10 windows open and your running down 10 different searches simultaneously). Has squat in it about troubleshooting other than the kind of trouble shooting you get from a level one tech on the phone (ie: "is it plugged in, do you have a video source, is it turned on" kinda trash). What i need is a technicians manual on the thing.
I managed to get a nice image, if upside down (which makes sense, it looks like it was mounted upside down and the manual say that it can do this so I know it's not trashed). I just ran a dvd player into the input and used its screen saver. What a task that was turn it on, try to focus it before it goes out. turn off, repeat. The screen was a nice blue with a lot of gradients, and was really pretty when it was on.
Read a bunch of reviews on this thing and everyone who has it loves it, of course, opinions are really only relevant to the user, so i take them with a grain of salt.
I"m still searching online for anything else about it pertaining to trouble shooting. It's a shame the company has gone under. I searched on the kodak brand name and found the manual, but it's for a different projector. I wish it wasnt because it hade exploded diagrams and everything, woulda made hunting things down inside so much simpler.
Does the faulty ballast idea have merit? cause it does apear to keep running again though with no light i cant see the screen inside, not like an lcd where you can shine a light in it and see something, i doubt i'll be able to make out the chip.
Thanks for the replies. more are welcome. I really would like to get this thing running.

i have the same projector, and cutting off after 10 seconds or so is probably a bad bulb. mh bulbs sometimes will do that when they go bad, they get weak, draw too much current, and the ballast shuts down to protect itself. luckily my unit had a new bulb in it when i got it, and i've only got a couple 100 hours on it so far. it has been a very good projector a really good picture, except for the grayness on a "black" screen. (contrast ratio, as explained above) and it's not too bright 500 lumens. it will display a 1024x768 image though. if you take the bulb out and look at it , if its clear its probably got low hours on it, if its cloudy white or worse, its probably bad.
