Hey There!
I would like to buy a "good" (aprox 400-500usd/eur) CD Player but I'm quite lost with so many out there, do you guys recommend a model around that price to mod or tweak?, I've been looking a Marantz CD 6000 OSE which seems to be pretty good for the price, also there's a big thread regarding the Marantz CD63/67. Even though I would like to mode something old/vintage, I'm also considering some "good" transport like the Audiolab 6000CDT which costs around my budget, but in some way I'm losing the diy part of modding an older one.
What do you recommend guys?
Cheers.
EDIT: I'm also open to consider something like this https://www.ebay.de/itm/15477070495...rentrq:eea191891810ab8f0ebcb937fff44ce6|iid:1 , could it be somhow better than the Audiolab transport?

Philips CD620, CD630. Marantz CD40, CD50, CD60. CDM12.x players are poor by any means and will be outlived by the CDM4 units.
in fact everything depends on your level of competence and the importance of the side "beauty of the device"
+ cd471 472 473 and many otherPhilips CD620, CD630. Marantz CD40, CD50, CD60. CDM12.x players are poor by any means and will be outlived by the CDM4 units.

What did you figure out? I’m curious because I’m also looking for a decent CD player/transport.

Denon dcd 720EThanks a lot for the hints!, I'll do some research on those suggested.
@dreamth do you have any suggestions in models?
Cheers
DCD-720
Delta-Sigma DAC
DVD Mechanism
Not for me thanks.
My vote goes with those who have suggested early Philips Players.
I'd go even ''Older School'' !
CDM-1 Mechanism with a TDA1541A DAC Chip................................Hours of fun modding those.
Keep Anti-Statted up at all times to prevent the possibility of damaging anything and get cracking with that Soldering Iron !!!!

Not so funny as tou might think...and no matter what you do to a philips you won't get Denon's performance.
I had philips cd304 , grundig 7550 , marantz cd 63 , still have denon dcd 1560 and many others...all beaten to death by a stoc cheap yamaha...
Besides the best transport is a hard drive or no transport...like a ssd or usb.Even 15 years ago a hard disk would not lose a single bit before you hear it.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree! Not so funny as tou might think...and no matter what you do to a philips you won't get Denon's performance.

I've never heard a Denon CD player I could have lived with.
I have an old Philips CD160, unmodified, with its oversampling and filtering in place and on the odd time I pop it back in my system it still gets my foot tapping.
Most more modern players and DAC's are perfect on paper, but to me soulless.
And I strongly have to disagree re solid state or hdd listening, which I do a lot of, give me a CD player any time.
But I think we get off topic.
The Denon you mention I think is mostly smt technology so unless you have very good eyesight and a steady hand, not easily modd-able (if that's a word) which was the point of the OP.
I still say an early Philips has the most scope in this regard.

What do you wanna mod in 720 AE?
Personally i do expect digital readers to be perfect so that I can use tubes and tapes to destroy their perfection in a very predictable way.
I have also a Marantz cd 5000 and a cd 72 🙂

Because the OP asked about a Player to ''.....mod/tweak....''What do you wanna mod in 720 AE?

The whole point of this discussion.
Personally, with the Denon, I would begin by removing the Laser mech, then the Main PCB and fitting the innards from a Philips CD-160
Loads of mods to do, hours of fun
😉
Well, especially with the older Philips players I'd be cautious, the 4 digit displays are known to fail. The series previously recommended by me imho have the best of the best of all displays ever available in CD players.
Reliable, informative and easy to read.
If TDA1543 is allowed, you can include CD600, CD604, CD610 as well.

I mean, just have a look...
P.S: I expressively do not recommend the Sony (CDP-950/CDP-227ES - CXD1044/TDA1541), it has a very quirky analog stage, bad mechanism and general layout. But then, it even has a motorized remote controllable headphone pot... If you care about that
Also, stay away from CDM0/1 mechanisms, as praised as they are... They require a lot of skill and some knowledge required for the mechanical adjustment. CDM4 is fool-proove and almost never fails - even after 30yrs+.
Something that can't be said about ANY mechanism after CDM4. And I mean ANY.

As others have said regarding TDA 1541 machines with swing arm mechs, they sound good/great and there is also lots of stuff on upgrading them, (I have never had any problems with CDM 0 or 1 but I may have just been lucky) but I'll also add Kenwood DP-7090 it has eight PCM1702, a cheap easy to get and ok Sony mech, lots of room inside for any mods and after simply changing the OP Amps and caps as here.....

ended up besting players of up to £4K in a shootout some of us did.
Good luck.

PS.
It may help you to use a list such as this to assist, DAC's seem to have a 'House sound' in my view (or is that hearing), (I have never liked any PCM58 machine whereas PCM63 is great) in my limited experience. It would also help to check on replacement mech availability if required. (Mostly these may be Chinese clones but seem to work OK.
