I couldn't really find any information or discussion on the topic. How good is glass in terms of making a speaker cabinet? I know it will look ugly if stuffed, but I am wondering more about the acoustic properties. I read something about a guy making a cabinet out of granite and it supposingly sounded pretty good.
so what about glass?
so what about glass?
Depends how thick it is just like everything else. If it's two inches thick it'd probably work but it would have to be stuffed unless of course it was curved. of course then it would be prohibitively heavy very fragile and let's not forget extremely expensive.
I was thinking more like a wine bottle. I believe someone put 2 inch drivers in a pop bottle around here, but pop bottles are kind of flimsy so I thought glass might do a slightly better job?

I remember that too.... I thought it was a wine bottle. From a couple years back, IIRC.
Cheers!
I've just built a pair of TABAQ for tangband w3-871 in 18mm marble. The glass idea is very cool, and probably would sound similar. Mine sound great (they're stuffed though), but my ears are not trained, and I don't have the equipment to measure anything, at the moment, though I think diyaudio might become my new hoby.
I think the trick is to build them thick, so you don't get any ringing when you tap them.

I can only speak for myself, but I tried some Tang Band W3-871 drivers in a plastic pop bottle. It was surprisingly effective.
There was an idea around, I don't remember who from, to kick the bottom out of a glass bottle: Put some gravel or lead shot in the bottle, shake, crack!, out goes the bottom.
I'd really like to hear one made out of glass. I used a 1 liter pop bottle, IIRC 1.5 liters was a nicer thing to have.
I am definetly going to make these, I think I'm actually motiviated to do this now. How the heck do you "kick" the bottom out of a winebottle? I was planning to saw / cut it. I just need a pair of bottles big enough for a 3" driver. hm. wish me luck! i'll keep you guys updated. The drivers should be here in 2 weeks I think.

Unless bottle-shaped as above, how do you propose to seal the joints?
Any glass approaching a 1"> thickness would be very heavy and very expensive. On top of that, it would need to be tempered--
Not saying it's a bad idea per se, there are some hurdles though.

thanks for the links. seems like I missed the gravel part when I read through the first one a while ago. I still don't really see how this could give me a 3" opening and I hate to go buy a bottle of wine to just pour it out.. i'm not a wine guy..
oh wow. I thought i searched. hm. seems like its been done before, lol now I feel less special, but I'm going to do it anyways!

ugh. the bottle wont nearly be 1" thick. it'll just be a standard bottle, don't plan on running high volumes and I think i'll put a high pass filter on it.

With the curved shape it doesn't have to be thick. The bottom of the bottle gets knocked out, then you fabicate a cap for the open bottom with a hole for the driver. Might as well incorporate "legs" into the cap while you are at it.
You can just leave the other end open, but damp it to get an aperiodic box.

What is an aperiodic box? also what are the legs for? I will have an X shaped bottle holding holding it sideways on pieces of foam, that should help with the dampening.

Go for it! You'll be pleasantly surprised

An aperiodic box can be looked at as either as a leaky sealed box or a vented speaker with a heavily damped port. A TL (in its narrowest sense) is an aperiodic box.
If the speaker is mounted on the bottom with the mouth pointing away, you need something to keep it from rolling around.
dave
the mouth, or the magnet end of the speaker will be pointed towards a wall, approximately 14 inches of space between it and the wall. The X shaped wine bottle holder will stop it from rolling around.
